Last night on his extremely popular internet radio program, “The Dinner Party Show”, which he co-hosts with his good friend and fellow writer, Eric Shaw Quinn, Christopher Rice announced the title and publication date of his new supernatural thriller, “The Vines”.
“The Dinner Party Show”, free to listeners everywhere and broadcast Sunday nights at 9:00 pm EST is hysterically funny. The show includes weekly guests, timely discussions and featured correspondents all created by Mr. Rice and Mr. Quinn.
Rice the best-selling author of “A Density of Souls”, “Light before Day”, and his first foray into the supernatural genre “The Heavens Rise”, which was nominated for a “Bram Stoker Award”, gave this brief synopsis of “The Vines”:
“Lurking in the soil of a storied antebellum mansion, a sinister force is awakened when a wealthy heiress discovers her husband’s betrayal…
“The dark antebellum history of Spring House, a beautifully restored plantation house on the outskirts of New Orleans, has largely been swept aside by its elegant new iteration. But something sinister lurks beneath the soil of the old mansion.
“When heiress and current owner of Spring House, Caitlin Chaisson, is witness to her husband’s stunning betrayal at her birthday party, she tries to take her own life in the mansion’s cherished gazebo. Instead, the blood she spills awakens dark forces in the ground below. Chaos ensues and by morning her husband has vanished without a trace and his mistress has gone mad.
“Nova, daughter to Spring House’s groundskeeper, has always suspected that something malevolent haunts the old place, and in the aftermath of the birthday party, she enlists Caitlin’s estranged best friend, Blake, to help her get to the bottom of it. The pair soon realizes that the vengeance enacted by this sinister and otherworldly force comes at a terrible price.”
In an interview right before the release of “The Heavens Rise”, Mr. Rice had this to say about writing a supernatural book:
“I’ve been wanting to try supernatural for years but I was actively discouraged from doing so by various editors. They insisted that unless I did something directly in line with what my mother had done, there was no point. It was very discouraging to hear this and knocked the wind out of me on a few occasions. The other side of it was that it took me a while to find a concept I could really sink into. I had circled the idea of doing a novel about aliens for years. I think the entire genre is languishing and ripe for a reboot after X-Files exhaustion, but I haven’t found the right way in yet. Ironically, I arrived at this supernatural idea the same way I arrived at all of my non-supernatural novels, by diving into a group of characters I wanted to write about and exploring their dynamic. The discover that one of them had a terrifying yet magical gift – mind control – was something that happened organically while I was trying to figure out who they were.”
“The Vines” is scheduled to be published on October 21st, 2014 and can be pre-ordered at www.amazon.com/The-Vines-Christopher-Rice/dp/1477826637/.
