COAL is a community-centric creative group comprised of artist members (approximately 250) representing both coastal communities of Carlsbad and Oceanside, every summer weekend you may have seen these artists and their work while driving along the coast in Carlsbad where the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League sets up “Art on the Green” (weather permitting). Summertime for COAL also celebrates the Annual Open Juried art show, which is open to non-members and members alike, this year COAL celebrates the 63rd year of this inspiring display of local creative talent where the awards include not just ribbons, but cash prizes! The Annual Open Juried show draws artists entries from all over Southern California, and the submissions begin pouring in this Saturday (July 26th) and Sunday (July 27th), the official Exhibition Opens Wednesday July 30th and artists submissions will be on display daily (excluding Tuesdays) until September 7th.
The COAL 63rd Annual Open Juried Show Awards Reception will be held on August 3rd from 3:00pm until 5:00pm.
Summertime requires us all to slow down the pace and take in the beautiful scenery around us, in our hometown or on vacation. Each year Carlsbad in summertime hosts a rising population of tourists, local San Diego visitors and residents, all flocking to its perfect climate and beautiful sights galore, many of which are represented in COAL pieces. A stroll along Carlsbad Boulevard on your way to the beach or while licking a Cessy’s soft serve ice cream you will immediately notice the artists set up and notice how the local environment fuels the creative fire for many of the artists.
The COAL Art Gallery is tucked away in the Carlsbad Village Faire shopping center in the heart of downtown Carlsbad. It is located more specifically on the lower level on the North end in Suite 101. For more information including regular visitor hours call the Gallery directly at (760) 434-8497, they are also greatly in need of volunteers for this art show and future events.
Carlsbad’s artist community is nationally renowned in part due to the popularity (attendance) at the largest single day street fair in the nation, the Carlsbad Village Street Faire. Each May the seaside streets are packed with “creatives”, displaying their talents with every medium conceivable, such as traditional oil paintings, stained glass, sand and rock art, sculptures, crafts and cuisine and so much more, many of which are COAL members. These artistic displays don’t just come out for the street fair however, art is being created year round in Carlsbad, in every nook and cranny and nowhere are the creative fires hotter than at the COAL Gallery in summertime!
Some of the local COAL artists also have personal biographies, describe their preferred mediums and provide photographs of works for sale online through the COAL website. Exhibits change frequently and “Best of Show” works are also featured on the COAL website monthly.
