For many of us, a day without coffee is like a day without sleep: We just can’t function. Now a new study offers justification for our addiction by showing coffee helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes while boosting weight loss, reported Food Consumer on Tuesday.
Drinking more coffee lowers the likelihood of weight gain, said researchers. They also discovered that stabilized blood sugar levels.
In another study reported in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers discovered that daily coffee consumption lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the Mayo Clinic reports that coffee can suppress your appetite. It also can boost your body’s calorie-burning ability.
But what’s really steaming hot in the world of weight loss is known as Bulletproof Coffee. It’s particularly popular among Paleo dieters and CrossFit fans, reported the Phoenix New Times on Tuesday.
What goes into the connection? One teaspoon of coconut oil, one teaspoon of unsalted butter and eight ounces of hot coffee. Froth up the ingredients and voila, buttery, oily coffee.
Believers in Bulletproof Coffee say it boosts their energy, offers a high fat low carb diet breakfast option and sustains them through the morning. And even those who are dubious about all those benefits agree it might be a better choice than no food at all.
“For someone who doesn’t eat any breakfast at all, it is better than nothing, since they will be getting some calories to break the fast and help with satiety,” says nutrition and culinary consultant Michelle Dudash. “However, for the person who eats breakfast with some fat in it, the benefits from this drink would start to drop off.”
She agrees that coffee does offer some benefits, including antioxidants and alertness. As for the MCT coconut oil, it has “some promising fat-burning effects.”
But Michelle recommends moderation when it comes to melted butter. “Overall, a cup of Bulletproof Coffee probably wouldn’t cause harm to the average healthy person,” she concluded.
Moreover, according to Dr. William Lagakos, that coconut oil in the coffee just might provide benefits for your liver. While a combination of saturated fat and MCTs may not protect your liver against alcohol immediately, several days of consuming those ingredients might do the trick.
Add in the coffee, which he notes might also help, and you’re looking at a combination that may help if you enjoy your Fourth of July imbibing too enthusiastically. A more “bulletproof” idea for health: Stick to water.
