Out of the 18 one loss teams remaining in college football, 15 of the teams represent the power five conferences. Only East Carolina, and Colorado State come from the “group of five” conferences, while Notre Dame is the lone independent national power. With four undefeated teams left in the field, we decided to rank the best one loss teams.
As it currently stands, it’s likely that a couple of these teams will make the college football playoffs. However, there are certain conferences with multiple one loss teams ready to battle for conference supremacy. It’s not solely the SEC that has a lot at stake in the coming month. Therefore, the list of teams will rapidly dwindle down within a couple of weeks. Hopefully, the college football season will display a little more clarity.
Four SEC West teams in Top five of AP Poll.
Big 10 (4) Michigan State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota
The top four teams in the Big 10 are split in the East and West divisions. Barring any upsets, the good money would be on Michigan State making it to the college football playoff out of the Big 10. Only Nebraska has a conference loss, and that was to Michigan State.
PAC-12 (4) Oregon, Arizona State, Arizona, Utah
All four teams have a conference loss here. The Ducks lost to Arizona, but they have a chance to run through the PAC-12 North and win the division. The rest of the teams are all from the PAC-12 South, and the gauntlet has already started. It’s going to be extremely tough for one of the teams win the rest of those conference games.
Big 12 (3) TCU, Kansas State, Baylor
The Big 12 has three one loss teams, but only Kansas State remains undefeated in conference play. TCU might be the best team in the conference, and they are the highest ranked program. The Big 12 runs a round robin formula so every team will get their chance.
SEC (3) Alabama, Auburn, Georgia
All three of these one loss teams are rated in the top 10. Georgia finds itself the leader in the SEC East, while Auburn and Alabama are in the vaunted SEC West. Auburn still has Georgia and Alabama on the schedule this season. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
ACC (1) Duke
Duke is the lone one loss team in the ACC. Last season they faced Florida State in the ACC title game, so the Blue Devils were a trendy pick this season. If Duke runs the table, they will represent the Coastal division in the ACC Championship. Duke is an incredible long shot to make the college football playoff.
AAC (1) East Carolina
East Carolina is the highest rated team not in a power conference. Their explosive offense has been a problem for every opponent this season. Unfortunately, the Pirates won’t have the opportunity to jump into the top four.
MWC (1) Colorado State
Colorado State has given up more than 24 points just once this season. Yet, it’s the passing game that has the country going crazy over Colorado State’s start. They lost to Boise State early in the year, but chances are they can finish the season with that one loss.
Ind (1) Notre Dame
Notre Dame has the toughest loss out of all the teams on the list. For a second, it looked like the Fighting Irish would still be undefeated. Their remaining schedule is tough enough to make the college football playoff bracket.
