While Chris Ward and his band made no attempt in recreating the Eagles’ look, that didn’t matter to the people attending the Sept. 21 show at Paradise Performing Arts Center. And Ward made sure people knew how much he and the rest of the band liked the Eagles, even though they weren’t wearing the attire to match their look.
“We don’t look like the Eagles, but we sure do respect them,” he said right after the band’s performance of “Take It Easy.” They then transitioned into “Lyin’ Eyes.”
Not looking like The Eagles didn’t seem to bother the audience, as they were enthralled with the band’s performance. Many were dancing during most of the concert and encouraged others to join. And the band kept urging people to sing along if they knew the lyrics.
“You guys are killing it,” shouted one audience member. This came on the heels of a magnificent guitar solo by Ross Nyburg during the band’s cover of “Heartache Tonight.”
And it wasn’t just Ward singing the whole time. During covers of “Seven Bridges Road” and “Heartache Tonight,” Ward passed it off to the man responsible for the bongos, wind chimes and various other instruments – Kenny Coulter. It was easy to spot the joy and excitement in Coulter’s performance by the smile that wouldn’t leave his face – hence his nickname “Smiling Kenny.”
The Chris Ward Band is not just a band to see for its rendition of great Eagles music; they’re a band to see for those who appreciate good country music as well. Whether he’s performing solo or with the band, Ward is a master vocalist and guitar player. Prior to the intermission, every member of the band left except for Ward, who stayed and beautifully performed a solo, acoustic version of “Desperado.”
Ward and his band didn’t just cover the Eagles. They also introduced the people of Paradise to some of their own original work, too, and they covered other classic hits such as “I Love It.” One of the final performances had Ward performing an acoustic solo cover of “God Bless the USA,” which he dedicated to the veterans in the audience.
