More Merrill Tricks Revealed for Halloween: She Protected Convicted Felon, a Dem Party Boss, at the Expense of Integrity
Southington, CT, Oct. 31, 2014- News broke yesterday that the office of the Secretary of the State is under scrutiny again for possibly partaking in partisan and ethically questionable activities. Merrill’s office allowed convicted felon and Bridgeport Democratic Party boss Mitchell Robles to remain in a position of public trust in spite of lying under oath about his past felony drug convictions. It appears that despite an initial attempt from a subordinate to remove him from the position as a Connecticut Notary Public, Mitchell Robles, was allowed to remain in office after explaining his influence and role within the Testa Bridgeport Democratic Party machine.
“This is just another blatant partisan abuse of power from the Merrill administration,” Peter Lumaj stated in response to the news. “Secretary Merrill allowed someone in her office to ‘squash’ this problem because it benefited her politically. This is just another Merrill scandal where she is ignoring fraud and being partisan. It’s been a long line of abuses of her office. Since being sworn in in 2011, there have been multiple ethical scandals surrounding the office of the Secretary of the State and it should be a real concern to every single voter in Connecticut. I hope some newspapers who have endorsed her will reconsider their endorsements after such an obvious breach of ethics.”
Lumaj continued, “It is very obvious that Mr. Robles has no business serving the public in this capacity. Our #EndCorrupticut initiative would have prevented him from doing so; it’s unfortunate that Ms. Merrill didn’t and, in fact, apparently ignored it. We need to move away from the partisan politics of corruption, complacency and patronage and focus on returning honor, integrity and accountability to state government.”
Brock Weber, Campaign Manager for Lumaj2014 echoed Lumaj’s sentiments, “Preventing fraud is apparently something Denise Merrill ‘does not get involved in’- whether its voter fraud or partisan fraud within her own office, Denise Merrill has willfully allowed these violations to occur- repeatedly.” Weber continued, “On the taxpayers dime, Denise Merrill has relentlessly promoted herself and her party’s interest above the interests of Connecticut voters. Apparently, Ms. Merrill hasn’t learned from her past mistakes but, as voters, we need to. It’s time to vote her out because clearly Merrill’s been terrible. No wonder she is hiding from debating and depriving the voters of a chance to discuss these issues she has ignored. In the spirit of Halloween, I think it’s only appropriate to say that these are her tricks. It will be a treat for the people of Connecticut when we defeat her!”
