A new aged rum from Panama is being launched reflecting the storied lifestyle of the world famous Copacabana rooftop nightclub located in New York’s Times Square.
Copacabana 1940 aged rum is said to be inspired by New York City of the 1940s, a time when the “Big Apple” was becoming the international capital of commerce and fashion; an era when music ruled the night at the legendary Copacabana.
Celebrity Chef Alex Garcia and Restaurateur Spencer Rothschild, partners in the Copacabana and Barrio Spirits in New York City, are introducing the smooth seven year old añejo rum to the spirits industry with an official launch event on July 8 at the iconic nightclub.
For the rum brand’s first product, the two industry experts have assembled a team that includes former president and COO of Cruzan Rum International Jay Maltby, along with Barrio Spirits’ Director of Sales Robert Rosenthal and the legendary Cuban Master Distiller, Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez.
“After many years traveling the world to source the finest rum, I am thrilled to introduce New York to Copacabana 1940 Añejo rum” says Rothschild. “I am so proud of the experts that have come assembled to create an añejo rum worthy of bearing the name of the most famous nightclub and beach in the world.”
Born in Cuba, master distiller and blender “Don Pancho” Fernandez has been making rum for five decades. His most recent efforts include Zafra, Panamonte and Panama Red, Ron De Jeremy, Bohemio, Cana Brava, YOLO, Debonaire and his own namesake brand Don Pancho Origenes.
Copacabana 1940 is a distilled at one of the most revered distilleries in the world, Las Cabras in Panama. The central province of Herrera is known for its abundant sugar cane fields that grow in nutrient-rich volcanic soil fed by rivers stemming from mineral-rich mountain springs. This all leads to an opulent, well balanced, sensual rum with strong hints of citrus and a light caramel and almond finish.
Authenticity, heritage and flavor are the cornerstones for building this great high-end spirit brand with remarkable sales potential. The oval shaped bottle is made by Saver Glass from France and decorated with the iconic Copacabana girl.
Copacabana 1940 aged rum is distributed in the New York City by Royal Wine Corp.

Chef Alex Garcia is Cuban born chef who helped popularize a version of Latin inspired food at several New York City restaurants, including Patria, Calle Ocho and AG Kitchen. He also appears on the Food Network. One of Chef Garcia’s famous creation is a rum glazed shrimp dish, which he will create using Copacabana 1940 for the launch event.
The launch event on July 8th will also introduce two signature cocktails: the Good Fella and Show Girl.
The music will be curated by DJ Miguelito spinning his brand of classics with a modern twist. A special dance performance by Melanie Torres’ Dance on Two Studio. The staff will be wearing bow-ties designed by Wonder Lee. This event will be supported by Second Stage Theatre Uptown’s production of Mala Hierba written by Tanya Saracho (HBO’s “Girls” and “Looking”) and directed by Jerry Ruiz.
The rum brand launch event will introduce club owners, restaurant owners, the spirits industry and nightlife tastemakers to Copacabana 1940, faithfully reflecting a time of glamor and elegance.
