A 60-year-old who police said stabbed his ex-wife to death and wounded her mother in Gwinnett County was found dead hours later on Thursday from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.
They have identified the suspect as Chhay Hour, his ex-wife as 37-year-old Chheng Voight and the ex-wife’s mother as 59-year-old Ya Va, according to Gwinnett County police. However, it’s unclear what motivated the violence and how long the couple was married.
The investigation began around 2:15 p.m. when officers were dispatched to a home in the 1200 block of Chris Lake Drive in Lawrenceville after someone called 911 to report the stabbing, police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said. When the officers arrived on scene, they discovered two women who were suffering from stab wounds, Pihera said.
Investigators later learned that the incident began as a domestic dispute between Hour, his ex-wife and her mother, Pihera said. The incident began in the dining room of the home and then moved outside into the street, she said.
“A nearby neighbor witnessed the incident and subsequently shot at the suspect,” Pihera said. Hour was able to leave the scene in an unknown vehicle, she said. The witness stayed behind and was interviewed by detectives.
Two young children, who were present in the home when the crime occurred, were not injured and they have since been released to a family member who took them away from the scene, Pihera said.
Voight later died from her injuries and her body turned over to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, police said. But her mom who was still at the hospital Friday, is expected to recover, Pihera said. Less than four hours later, around 6. p.m., officers responded to the Norcross Gun Club and Range located on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in reference to a call that a person was shot, Pihera said.
“The suspect, Chhay Hour, was located inside the location with a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Pihera said. “He died of his injuries.”
