Edgar Allen Poe: “I remained too much inside my head and ended up losing my mind.”
“X” is the October 1 season premiere episode of “Criminal Minds.” This article contains spoilers, so beware! Be sure to check out the slideshow for more quotes from the episode. “Criminal Minds” airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. CT on CBS.
This episode does a good job of taking what people have grown to be expected of “Criminal Minds” and throwing a wrench in it. As soon as they show the guy with his son and the dismembered legs, the jump to unsub isn’t all that far. It is what the writers do time and time again. The shot of the guy with a sketchbook with no face starts to shoot up red flags.
It’s great to see that there is some mystery in the show again. The writers have played out following around the unsub, so it is nice to temporarily have a twist thrown in there. Of course, then the writers ruin it by showing the actual unsub. What’s weird is that even after the reveal, the team chases down a false lead. It is confusing.
There really is not a reason to see the unsub’s face. What is learned by following around the unsub and Angie? Nothing is revealed other than Angie knows how to work an unsub to her advantage, even though she still loses a limb in the process. The writers started out great with the unsub fake out, but then they fell into familiar patterns.
Alright, let’s talk the newest agent, Kate Callahan. The writers do a good job of really introducing her to everyone. She has moments with everyone on the team. It’s not like with Blake, where the writers just paired her mainly with Reid. Kate bonds with everyone. It is great to see her mess with Reid. Hopefully, the writers will keep up this humor. Do you like her?
What is a little weird is the part at the end. Kate seems to think that they are missing something else in the case. Is this a feeling that Hotch also shares, or is he looking into the case file after that talk? Let’s hope that Hotch is also suspicious.
The writers set up a decent overarching mystery – a human trafficking ring. Hopefully, they do a better job than they did with the replicator. What would be interesting is if the BAU takes on another case that involves a girl stolen from this trafficking ring. Then maybe the team can slowly start to put together that something is wrong here.
