Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo is among one of the world’s best players. In fact, he was given the 2013 Ballon d’Or, which is the award that pronounces one as the best player of the year. As for 2014, Ronaldo will most likely battle it out with Argentine striker Lionel Messi again, and it will most likely depend on who has a better performance at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
For the 2013-2014 soccer season, Ronaldo had his success with his current club team from Spain – Real Madrid. He did not win the domestic league in Spain, La Liga, coming in third place instead, but his team did win the UEFA Champions League, making Real Madrid the European club champions. So far, Real Madrid is the only European club team with the most Champions League titles, 10 total.
Another feat that Cristiano Ronaldo was able to conquer with Real Madrid was the Copa del Rey title in Spain. This soccer tournament is a Spaniard domestic soccer tournament that involves all of the teams from all of the different divisions. This is another great trophy to win for Spaniard teams, and Real Madrid has won the title 19 times.
Ronaldo and Real Madrid have won two out of a possible three trophies for this last European soccer season. On top of that, Ronaldo was given the best trophy a soccer player could receive. The Ballon d’Or was awarded to Ronaldo for 2013, which is the highest honor a player can receive. Before that, Ronaldo lost two years in row. The trophy from the previous two years went to Lionel Messi.
A lot of success with his club should give Cristiano Ronaldo enough drive to be ready to take on Italian giants AS Roma on July 29 in Dallas for the Guinness International Champions Cup. However, Ronaldo will be coming from the World Cup in Brazil, which is another challenge altogether.
With his national team Portugal, Ronaldo had problems qualifying for the World Cup. In the UEFA qualification rounds, Portugal came in second place for Group F, behind Russia. Portugal was sent to an elimination round against Sweden. Portugal and Ronaldo scraped past Sweden and qualified for the World Cup in Brazil.
Ronaldo’s success with his country has not been as successful as it has with his club team, but Portugal is one of the candidates to make the final four in the biggest soccer event in Brazil. The World Cup is tough tournament, and Ronaldo has also been deterred with muscle injuries as well.
Ronaldo’s performance in the World Cup will set the stage for his preparation against AS Roma in July. This match between Real Madrid and AS Roma is one of the most anticipated matches from the Guinness International Champions Cup coming this summer to the US.
