I love plaids, checks and tartans! I’m a weaver trapped in a crocheter’s body, but, I’ve discovered a way to mix crochet and weaving to make a houndstooth check fabric.
First the background warp must be crocheted, in a mesh stitch in a certain color combination. Then drawing yarn wefts over and under the stitches, the houndstooth pattern of broken checks will emerge. It’s most graphic with high contrast colors, such as black and white. It’s also effective in black and a primary color. My sample is made with black and red yarns to match school colors.

Rnd: 53: Rep row 4.
Rnd 54: Rep row 3, ch l. Fasten off both colors.
Cut 92, 48 inch lengths of red yarn and 92, 48 inch lengths of black yarn
Thread yarn needle with 4 lengths of red yarn.
Weave vertically in alternating over and under pattern, through first row of meshes.
Weave 2 lines of red and 2 lines of black, all across lapghan, ending with 2 lines red. Check your weaving to make sure each line alternates properly.
Gently pull lapghan into shape. Tie square knots using same color fringe. Trim evenly and somewhat short as to not get caught in any machinery.
