With the United States being confronted with what appears to be the most credible threat to its literal existence in history from organized terrorists such as ISIS in the Middle East this is hardly the time Americans want to hear of sinister internal forces cutting back on their own democratic freedoms. Such a crackdown on democratic freedoms at home in the United States makes resistance to terrorist forces appear useless for after all what is it we are fighting to preserve. Denver students have conveyed this message loudly as they recently walked out of class to protest an ultra conservative US history proposal reports Fox News on Sept. 23, 2014.
On Tuesday hundreds of students walked out of their classrooms around suburban Denver to protest a conservative led school board proposal aimed at focusing history education on topics which promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority. The student protest has followed a sick-out from teachers which shut down two high schools in the politically tense area. The students said their demonstration had been organized via word of mouth and on social media. Many of the students were seen waving American flags and carrying signs which included messages which read “There is nothing more patriotic than protest.”
One of the protesting students in Denver, Tori Leu, commented education in America should not be censored reported ABC News. The students want a complete overview of American history in order to really understand the past and where the country has come from. The protesters share a sense of disgust with a conservative school board proposal that instructional materials present primarily positive aspects of the nation and its heritage.
Julie Williams, the conservative school board member who made the proposal, says school kids should not be encouraged to think of the United States as a bad place even though there are things which have happened which Americans may not be proud of. One of the student demonstrators, Tyrone G. Parks, who is a senior at Arvada High School, has replied that the country”s foundation has been built on civil protest.
The student protestors are right on target with their concerns that there will be nothing left of the freedom Americans have fought for if history education becomes a propagandized political machine instead of a truthful force aimed at opening up minds and encouraging a continuation of searches for positive changes. The direction of American education suggested by Williams is frightening. It appears she is ready to close down all of the students minds by hiring reactionary Communist oriented psychiatrists as teachers who will insist any students not thinking what they define as the only correct way of viewing things are suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and therefore do not belong in the world of the living.
One of the only things that often keeps the United States from collapsing in spite of all of its troubles is the freedom for Americans to share how disgusted they are with conditions in the country and why changes have always been and always will be needed. It is this view of things which also encourages mentally healthy creative minds.
