Typically, the best-dressed fashion barometer in the U.K. is Duchess Kate Middleton. However, Amal Alamuddin Clooney tops the list of nominees for the 2014 British Fashion Awards as of this writing. Lady Amal Clooney not only leads all competitors, but Catherine Duchess of Cambridge did not make the cut at all, according to an October 29 Us Magazine celebrity news report.
The British Fashion Council chooses the nominees, but the public chooses the winners. And between the two voting bodies, the woman known for recycling dresses and her often frugal approach to style — early on — is not in the running this year. Despite her status among the Royal Families and the public’s ongoing obsession with her pregnancy, Kate Middleton was upstaged by Amal Clooney and others this time around.
A string of “Kates” were on the list (Kate Bush and Kate Moss), but missing was Duchess Kate Middleton who has been enjoying the moniker (among other handles) as global fashionista. It’s odd that the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t make the cut, but there are a number of possible reasons why she fell from grace in the public’s eye.
First, and probably the most significant reason the Duchess has been snubbed is because there is a new fashion sheriff in town, and her name is Amal Clooney. Prior to “marrying up,” the lawyer was largely unknown, especially in the world of fashion. In fact, prior to exchanging vows with Mr. Hollywood, she was most comfortable in lukewarm colors and closet-grabs. Now, Amal has suddenly been thrust into the limelight after bearing some signature fashion names: Stella McCartney pantsuit for her civil ceremony, the Alexander McQueen dress for the rehearsal dinner, and the stunning Oscar de la Renta wedding gown the fashion designer customized for her before his death recently.
Perhaps, the snub to Duchess Kate in favor of Lady Clooney has more to do with risk. Amal proudly dons her signature flared ensembles and minis. They both prefer bright colors and floral patterns, but the newlywed is open to new trends, while Kate Middleton is more cautious in her approach to fashion.
In her defense, Middleton is restrained by Palace decorum. Besides, the last thing Kate wants to do is upset Queen Elizabeth for getting too adventurous and trying to keep pace with Amal Clooney by showing off her royal pins. As further consolation for apparently being snubbed, Duchess Catherine was nominated in 2013 for the prestigious British fashion award.
Others nominees who made in the running for the British Style Award for 2014 are Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne, Emma Watson, and Helen Mirren, to name a few. Head over to the official website to cast a vote for your favorite male/female nominee. The deadline is November 5 and the winner will be announced on December 1.
