Oklahoma City’s primary residential historic district closest to downtown is called Heritage Hills http://www.heritagehills.org/hh/
The Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum http://www.oklahomaheritage.com/ sits between Heritage Hills, Midtown http://midtownokc.com/ and Harn Park http://yeahstub.com/article/harn-park-turns-100. This is the only business building originally placed within this area. Any others are vintage mansions converted to businesses or of newer construction, when properties failed due to fire or disrepair.
The neighborhood and museum are protected by the National Register of Historic Places http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Oklahoma_County,_Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Heritage Museum has dollar Saturdays through the end of August. Every third Thursdays, it’s art activities for free for the 6 and under crowd. http://www.oklahomaheritage.com/NewsEvents.aspx
Currently, the art gallery features an exhibit with two parts. Dioramas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diorama, and oil and acrylic portraits of western figures. Handcut, hand painted cardboard dioramas http://www.oklahomaheritage.com/GaylordPickensMuseum/SpecialExhibits.aspx by Jason Cytaki are matched with a number of portraits from the Oklahoma Heritage Museum collection. Both are designed per the accompanying notations in the exhibit, to present more realistic or rugged images of Western landscapes, and figures. (i.e. Ansel Adams photographs are clear, pristine and without rough edges).
Within the general collection there are a wide variety of portraits of Oklahoman’s who have made major contributions in and out of the state. The variety includes but is not limited to: bronze busts; photographs and oil/watercolor/acrylic paintings celebrating founding Fathers and Mothers of Oklahoma.
There are specific displays connected both to Mr.Edward L. Gaylord and to Mr. T. Boone Pickens and a room that is full of multiple stations featuring about 30 celebrated Oklahoman’s in 10 video narratives performed by the honoree where practical. This mix includes but is not limited to: Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Will Rogers, Maria TallChief, Matt Hoffman, Wiley Post, Shannon Lucid and many others.
A 1900 collection of pins, ribbons, badges and simple jewelry with semi-precious stones is displayed in a glass case. Federated cross-class civic association memberships were commonly commemorated like with tokens that identified the wearer to others, citing years in such a program, rank within the program and the motto or insignia related to the program. Religious affiliation and political affiliation might also be marked by such an array. The woman who owned this collection, a Mrs.Anna Korn held the original idea of having a museum that celebrated Oklahoma and Oklahomans, beginning in 1927.
The architecture for the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum may appear familiar to some. This expansive building is very similar in materials and visual planes to the old Central High School in Midtown.Solomon Layton designed both buildings and the Skirvin Plaza Hotel in Downtown Oklahoma City. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skirvin_Hilton_Hotel
