A dog finds human remains and brings a leg bone home to its shocked owner in Atlanta. Mike Page, the owner of Brix the dog, said he was disturbed to find his pet had discovered a large bone and was chewing on it along his front porch. The Daily Mail reports this Friday, October 31, 2014, that local officials have determined it is a human bone, likely a decomposed tibia or femur.
It may sound like a spooky Halloween story, but when a dog finds human remains, police response is swift and all too real. Authorities believe that Brix the dog has played a major role in helping detectives solve an ongoing case regarding a missing person in the Atlanta area. The female pet was said to have unearthed a human leg bone this week and then brought it back home.
Mike Page of John Creek Street in Atlanta noted in an interview with a local media station that the bone looked human. As a result, he took it from Brix’s mouth — she was nibbling at the end of the possible tibia — and phoned police. It looks like his hunch that something was seriously wrong was correct.
“All of a sudden, she shows up with one on the porch. She had the bone in her mouth on the porch and she left the other one in the driveway, that’s disturbing,” revealed Page in a statement.
It appears that these remains were no Halloween prop or prank. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed this morning that the large bone was a piece of decomposed human leg. Following Brix’s shocking discovery, police teams amassed a group of cadaver dogs to search the entire area. Within the course of a few hours, the keen animals had helped detectives find a long abandoned home in a nearby area. Inside was a decomposed human skeleton.
As a result of the advanced stages of decay, Jobs and Hire News continues today, investigators were unable to determine whether the bones belonged to a man or woman, nor what the race of the individual may have been. The medical examiner’s report has not been fully released yet, but the source notes that there appears to be no physical damage or trauma to the bones. The identity of the victim, as well as the cause of death, is unknown at this time.
Brix the dog is wagging its tail proudly in the spotlight this week, as the intelligent pet somehow managed to sniff out and detect the human remains. She is likely the only reason, police say, that they have managed to get this far in the case. The tibia served as a marker for the rest of the skeleton to be discovered.
“Had we not found these initial bones out here, we wouldn’t even be out here right now to find the current remains that we’ve located,” Lt Charles Hampton , Atlanta’s police homicide commander said. “[Detectives are] glad we found the initial bones, and hopefully we can bring some type of closure to the family [of the deceased victim once identified].”
Due to the interesting nature of this “dog finds human remains” case — especially falling on Halloween weekend — the story is receiving quite a bit of attention. However, animal experts and handlers are saying that this unearthing of a leg bone is not entirely surprising. There have been numerous incidents throughout the years of dogs finding and digging up bones, though a bone belonging to a human is certainly cause for concern. The video featured above is another case of a clever pet bringing his owner an unexpected and grisly find.
