Dr. Mehmet Oz revealed dirty restaurant secrets that could cause food poisoning and belly-flattening weight loss tips with Jennifer Lopez’s trainer, Tracy Anderson, on the Sept. 1 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Dr. Oz’s first guest was food investigator Peter DeLucia, a councilman in New York. DeLucia said even the finest restaurants in the world are guilty of sanitation infractions that could make you violently sick or even die.
For instance, he noted that most restaurants don’t clean their menus, which are teeming with germs and bacteria from the hundreds of customers who have touched them before you.
Dr. Oz suggested carrying a hand sanitizer or washing your hands after handling your menu, especially if it’s made of plastic, as people have gotten colds or the flu from touching dirty menus.
Another restaurant secret is that the drinks they serve often contain lots of bacteria because most ice machines are dirtier than a toilet bowl. Compounding the problem is that servers often use their hands to scoop up ice when preparing your drinks. DeLucia recommended not getting ice in your drinks when you order out.
Rotten Fish, Spoiled Meat and Lemon Wedges Dirtier Than the Floor
Dr. Oz said you should also be careful when ordering seafood, which can lead to Scombroid food poisoning, an illness caused by eating spoiled fish.
When fish spoils due to inadequate refrigeration, it releases a toxin that can make you violently ill. You should be especially careful when ordering tuna, mackerel, sardines and mahi mahi. DeLucia said a safer bet is to order salmon, trout or snapper, which are less likely to cause Scombroid fish poisoning.
Another shocking restaurant secret is that you may be eating rotten meat. A longstanding trick is to keep steak that’s past its prime and wait until somebody orders it well-done because more cooking disguises the flavor of spoiled meat.
Finally, you should avoid ordering lemon wedges because most restaurants never wash their lemons. Lab analyses indicate that lemons served in most restaurants (including the fancy ones) are as dirty as the floor.

On a separate segment, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson debunked common weight loss myths as they relate to exercise. Anderson has sculpted some of Hollywood’s fittest bodies, including Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, and Kim Kardashian, who looks amazing after losing 56 pounds on a low carb ketogenic style Atkins diet.
Lopez looks hotter than ever at 44 after her 10-pound weight loss on a vegan diet. Tracy said Jennifer’s anti-aging weight loss and beauty secrets include a portion-controlled, mostly vegan diet and rigorous 90-minute workouts that combine high-intensity cardio dance exercise with light strength-training using body weight and high repetitions done with tiny hand weights (three pounds maximum).
Anderson said a common weight loss myth is that crunches give you a flat stomach. This is false, said Anderson, who shared her weight loss secrets in her book, Tracy Anderson’s 30-Day Method. In order to flatten your belly, you need to lose weight with a healthy diet and rigorous exercise. Tracy suggested doing a plank position to strengthen your entire core.
Anderson dispelled other weight loss myths, including:
- Sweating does not mean you’re burning more calories. Anderson suggested doing cardio exercise to pump up your heart rate.
- You don’t need to stretch before working out. Sometimes improper stretching can lead to injury, said Tracy.
