Dr. Mehmet Oz revealed metabolism boosters to enhance weight loss and secrets behind anti-aging wrinkle creams on the July 29 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Summer can be a tough time to lose weight because there are many opportunities to blow your diet at festive picnics, parties and barbecues, but you can boost your metabolism with a few simple steps.
First, Dr. Oz suggested drinking iced tea, such as white tea or matcha green tea. Both teas are rich in disease-fighting antioxidants, and tea (especially green tea) has been shown to increase metabolism.
Green tea contains EGCG, an antioxidant that has been shown to burn fat and protect against the free-radical damage that fuels aging and cancer. Studies show drinking two cups of green tea a day can help reduce belly fat. Green tea can also prevent fat storage and reduce your risks for heart disease and cancer.
Drinking iced tea can further enhance its metabolism-boosting properties, as consuming ice water forces your body to burn more calories to bring your body temperature back to normal.
Other metabolism boosters include adding psyllium husk fiber to food to curb fat absorption, eating a bowl of soup before a meal to suppress appetite, and eating tomatoes (a natural diuretic) to reduce bloating.
Anti-Aging Wrinkle Creams Don’t Have to Be Expensive
On a separate segment, Dr. Oz’s guest was cosmetics industry veteran Andrea Robinson. Robinson, a former Vogue beauty editor, said you don’t have to spend a fortune to get beauty creams and lotions that can help you look younger.
Andrea said one of the biggest beauty industry secrets is that many expensive high-end products contain the same ingredients as their cheaper drugstore counterparts. This is because most major cosmetics companies own various different brands which are sold under different names, so they’re actually selling both the high-end product and their cheaper versions.
Robinson compared a $26 department store lipstick to a $6 drugstore brand and revealed they were both made by the same manufacturer and contained similar ingredients. To avoid falling for this trap, Andrea suggested paying close attention to the list of ingredients and doing some online research to see which cosmetics companies make which brands.
While many wrinkle creams make outrageous anti-aging claims, Robinson said the following ingredients have been shown effective in studies: retinoids (to minimize wrinkles), antioxidants (to exfoliate dead skin and brighten your complexion), hyaluronic acid (to plump up your skin), and alpha hydroxy acids (for smoother skin).
