Some Halloween costumes are known to be gory and sometimes they can be in bad taste. The new Ebola costume being sold online today have folks a bit perturbed as many see this as an item being sold in bad taste, especially with people Ebola-stricken in West Africa fighting for their lives today.
Another big seller is hazmat suits complete with the face masks that look similar to an astronauts head gear. As the Ebola scare amps up, the real hazmat suits and protective garb offered online are selling out, but there is a Halloween costume called the Ebola Costume that is a big seller today.
The Huffington Post reports on Oct. 18 that the CEO of Brands On Sale was asked about the appropriateness of an Ebola costume right now. CEO Johnathon Weeks is insisting that this costume is “in the true spirit of the holiday.”
Weeks said, “You can go on any website for a zombie mask for an eight-year-old with cuts and scars all over their face.” He said in a recent interview, “It’s Halloween, it’s one day, if people are that serious about it, they don’t know what Halloween is about.”
Fox News “The Five” debated the Ebola costume on their show Friday and the consensus is, this is ‘sick.’ While the hazmat suit has been around for a while, this new Ebola costume has EBOLA on the top piece of this outfit. One man said if his grown children went out in this costume he’d put a stop to it immediately and make them change the costume.
The Atlantic suggests that this “Ebola Costume,” which is the name of the item, is “The worst Halloween costume” going this year and while Brands On Sale are offering this Halloween outfit, other big stores have opted not to sell it. Ricky’s, a popular NYC costume store, wouldn’t cross that line and refused to sell the costume. Another store, New York Costumes, does not carry the Ebola costume either, but they do carry hazmat suits and items that represent protective medical clothing.
The “Ebola” costume retails for $79.99 and it is not real protective gear so folks should not get a false sense of security having this costume in the house. People have died and are still dying in West Africa from the disease. For this reason it is considered in very bad taste to mock for Halloween wear. With that said, it still is a popular online order today.
Philadelphia physician’s assistant Maria McKenna thinks the Ebola costume is “sick — and not in a good way — since two fellow medical practitioners have tested positive for the disease.”
McKenna works with post-surgical patients at a hospital, said in a recent interview that marketing the Ebola costume on the coat tails of a crisis “definitely rubs me the wrong way.” She went on to say, “Normally I think that irony and humor is funny, but this thing with the costumes, is it really that funny? I mean, Ebola’s not even under control yet,”
It is all about what is in the headlines today that have sparked the interest of the masses, like the three-boobed lady. Last month the headlines shared the story of the three-breasted woman, who had a third boob implanted by a plastic surgeon. She did this to turn-off any prospective dates because she was fed up with dating, so she reported.
She was awarded so much attention online that it turned out to be some type of publicity-seeking move on her part. She made a big enough impression to have the folks who create the costumes come out with a three-breasted woman costume. While this is thought to be a big seller, it is the Ebola inspired costume that is expected to be one of the biggest sellers this year for Halloween.
