Entrepreneur. Comedian. Reality star. Actor. These days there doesn’t seem to be much that David Golshan doesn’t do.
You’ve seen him in movies, on comedy stages and on hit shows on Bravo like Shahs of Sunset and Millionaire Matchmaker, but his first love—business—is something that is never far from his mind. While in high school David started www.womensuits.com, an online storefront featuring women’s upscale suits. “Womensuits.com is the first business I ever started,” he told me. “It is by far one of my greatest things I have done.”
David has always been a person who believed in himself, but the journey to the success that womensuits.com now experiences was not overnight. It took me a year to get one order when I was in high school,” he explained. “Then in college I would get one or two orders a week.” It wasn’t until about 3 or 4 years after the site launched that something shifted. “That year I made more money than the previous 5 years combined,” he told me. He then had a choice to make: go to law school or continue building his business. He chose the latter, and things have taken off ever since.
What are the keys to the success of womensuits.com? It would have to be summed up in the site’s diversity, how it appeals to women (and now to men) and their individual taste and the fact that there is something for different aspects of their lives.
“You have to cater to the women or the men that can’t just go down to the store in their neighborhood and shop for something unique,” David says. “We saw that there was a need for women’s suits of all sizes.” This is one of the things that is sure to make womensuits.com a draw, especially for women of larger sizes. “We used to just carry up to medium sizes,” David told me. “Now we specialize in plus sizes, even offering a discount for the larger sizes.” Why did he choose to do something that runs counter to most retailers? “I wanted to go against the discrimination of plus size women. We don’t want anyone to feel as though they aren’t beautiful and can’t wear beautiful clothes regardless of their size.”
The public has definitely responed well to the business model that David put in place, making womensuits.com #1 by fashion magazines for their womens suits, hats and special occasion items. “It makes me feel incredible,” he told me when discussing the testimonials he gets each week from customers. “We’ve put in so much hard work.”
Today the site is not only popular for what it is offering it’s female clientele but what it is now making available to men, too. David says that being able to sense the needs of your prospective clients and feel that need is what he is most passionate about. It’s hard work, but it is well worth it.
His advice to other entrepreneurs out there? “Don’t ever quit. don’t give up.” This mirrors something that was tweeted by womensuits.com’s Twitter account: “The future is bright. Have faith and believe in yourself.”
