On tonight’s episode of “Escaping Alaska,” titled, “Igloo of Lies & Finding Frank,” a group of young people have made a secret pact to leave Alaska and go to the lower 48. It is not customary for the indigenous younger generations to leave their homes, in fact; it is considered treason.
Their English names are Tamara, Frank, Mary, Q and Nuala. The native Alaskans are expected to take care of their elders, as generations before them. The communities in this show are led to believe that the young Alaskans are the subject of a documentary about the struggling economy and employment problems facing the younger generation.
With Frank missing from the group, the producers went to Kotzebue, Alaska in search of him. When one of them came upon his house, it looked as though it was being torn apart. Nobody answered the door.
Q made a phone call to his girlfriend Irene, and told her he was going back to Alaska. Nuala is not returning, she is staying in California, where she is happy. Tamara and Mary are going home. Tamara has more self-confidence, and Mary is hoping to salvage her relationship with Tory. As the taxi comes to get the group, Nuala is in tears, as are the girls. She will miss her friends and will even miss Q.
The producers have found Frank at his family’s new home in Anchorage. The family had no choice but to sell their house. He will probably be the only one working for a while, and is going to be the man of the house.
Nuala called her stepmother Bonnie to tell her that she was really in San Diego. She asked her to not lie to her again. Had something happened to her, she would never have found her. She told Bonnie that she was staying in Sand Diego.
At the Airport, Q’s mother met him and was elated. He had reindeer stew awaiting him. He told his mother that Irene may visit in the summer.
Mary arrived and Tory was waiting for her. She promised to never leave him again. They hiked up Mission Hill, a beautiful place for them to talk. He wants to return to Portland to start his own business and wants her to help. He proposed to her and gave her a beautiful diamond engagement ring.
Tamara went home and her family was waiting for her arrival. They were holding up a banner welcoming the movie star home. She knew she had to tell the truth and tell them exactly where she was. She was ashamed of her lie. Her Grandma was happy for her and very happy she was home. Her family accepted her back with all the love they had before she left.
Q’s mother took much of the negative energy away from him and he felt much better. He told her about the fight he had with Nuala and being on steroids for his bronchitis.
Mary’s family was shocked that she lied, about where she was going. But they were just happy she returned in one piece. Then they asked if there were any more surprises; and she showed them her ring. The entire family was thrilled, and Tory told them that he not only loved Mary, but loved her entire family. They were so happy for her and that they were getting married. Mary was sad to leave her family, but happy to be with Tory. It was a very tearful goodbye.
Three months later, Frank was back in San Diego living and working at the hostel, he calls home about twice a week, but is happy. At another house, a woman knocked on the door; it was Bonnie who came down to see Nuala. As they hugged and cried and screamed at seeing each other, Nuala was so pleased to show her the apartment she has. Nuala wants to take her to the beach, because it is the first place anyone who comes to San Diego must go.
In Alaska, Q was showing Irene around his world. He was happy to show her around and she seemed happy to be with him. He asked her if she could picture herself living in Alaska and she told him she could.
Frank is still living and working at Lucky D’s Hostel and has taken a second job as a bartender to send money home to his family.
Tamara is away at fish camp. She reports having hunted two caribou and a moose.
Q has not located any “little people” yet, but his search continues … so does his long-distance relationship with Irene. Q is planning to go to college for Bio-Chemistry.
Nuala is feeling more “Californian” everyday. She found a job she loves working with puppies and is currently looking for “Mr. Right.”
Mary is happily planning her wedding and enjoying the Lower 48 in Washington State. She is helping Tory start up his construction business.
It is sad to see this series end, but maybe it will be the beginning of another. These Alaskan natives were beautiful people and it was joyful watching them try something new. As suspected, they all could not stay in Alaska after seeing what the Lower 48 had to offer on this episode of “Escaping Alaska.”
