Fall is the perfect time to take family photos in Lynchburg and Central Virginia. It’s fun to gather the family together with the beauty of nature for your fall photo backdrop.

Here are some great places to take family photos in Lynchburg and the surrounding area. A few are only available seasonally, but most are available all year and change with the seasons.
Pumpkin patches and corn mazes offer the perfect setting for fall photos. Smith’s Pumpkin Patch on Fort Avenue in Lynchburg is open daily through Halloween. The corn maze at Yoders’ Farm in Rustburg is open Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 26 through Nov. 1. Ravenelle Corn Maze at Russell Farms in Forest is open Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 27 through Oct. 26.
The waterfall at Hollins Mill Park is the perfect backdrop any season of the year. Hollins Mill Park is located at 1711 Hollins Mill Road. A short walk brings you to the Hollins Mill Tunnel. You can also enjoy a picnic lunch at Hollins Mill Park and access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and Point of Honor Trail.
Families flock to Percival’s Island for photos at The LOVEwork sculpture, sponsored by Discover Lynchburg through an arts and culture grant by the City of Lynchburg. Show the love in your family with photos at the LOVEwork sculptuer or the red LOVE shoe, located just off Main Street in downtown Lynchburg, beside the Craddock-Terry Hotel.
If you follow the RiverWalk Trail at Percival’s Island, you’ll come to the bridge crossing from the island to Amherst County. The bridge offers great river views for family photos. You can also take great photos of the family with the James River fountain in the background from the viewing deck at Percival’s.
Lynchburg’s parks are perfect for family photos. The bridge at Peaks View Park is a nice location with a background of trees and the flowing creek. Pose for fun family photos on the playground or the disc golf course.
Riverside Park offers several great locations for fall photos. Gather on the train at the Play Core playground. Head to the Overlook for a family photo with the mountains in the background. The gazebo garden is another beautiful location at Riverside Park. The Sprayground is open through September so gather for family photos in the water before the Sprayground season ends.
Ivy Creek Park offers beautiful mountain views. Gather on the fishing pier for photos with the lake in the background or pose on the nature playground for a fun photo shoot.
Grab your bikes and hit the trail for family photos. The Blackwater Creek Bikeway is a great location for photos of your active outdoor family.
Pick your favorite fall festival for a family photo shoot. Centerfest takes place in downtown Bedford on Sept. 27. The Virginia 10 Miler takes place in Lynchburg on Sept. 27. Day at the Point will be held at Point of Honor on Oct. 4.
Pose in front of Monument Terrace, Lynchburg Museum, Poplar Forest, Appomattox Court House National Historic Park or another local historic site for fall family photos.
Many local schools hold back to school nights during fall. Local churches are gearing up for fall festivals. Gather in front of your church or your child’s school to tell the story of your family in photos.
Take family photos with distant mountains in the background from the top of Candlers Mountain. Visit Snowflex and walk or drive up the gravel road to the LU Monogram. The views are breathtaking.
The Awareness Garden at the Blackwater Creek Bikeway entrance on Langhorne Road and the Anne Spencer garden on Pierce Street are two favorite Central Virginia Public Gardens. Both are wonderful locations for family photos, offering beauty in any season.
Old City Cemetery offers a beautiful setting for family photos. The butterfly garden and lotus pond are beautiful settings in any season. The old-fashioned swing near the chapel is also a favorite place for fun family photos.
Choose a fun backdrop for your family photos. Gather in front of Amazement Square, the mural at the Academy of Fine Arts, the CityArts mosaic across from Amazement Square or the mural in front of the Academy of Music. All are colorful so wear solid colors.
Take a short drive to Morris Orchard in Monroe for photos with the hay bale creations. You can also get great photos at Silver Creek and Seaman’s Orchard in Tyro or the Johnny Appleseed statue at Johnson’s Orchard in Bedford.
Pick any overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway and pose with the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains as your backdrop. If your family loves the outdoors, hit one of the many hiking trails alongside the Parkway for photo opportunities.
The Peaks of Otter Lodge offers beautiful scenery during any season. Sharp Top Mountain can be seen from in front of the lake. Families often pose on the bridge at the Peaks too. Take a hike or ride the bus to the top of Sharp Top Mountain for great outdoor photos. There is beauty in every turn in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Head to Cascade Falls or Apple Orchard Falls, just past the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Take a hike to the waterfall, a beautiful setting for family photos.
Let the kids pose in leaf piles in your yard or gather in front of your house or a favorite tree in your yard for family photos. Each season is new with flowers, shrubs and trees blooming in the spring and summer, leaves changing colors in the fall and your holiday decorations near Christmas.
