For the fifth straight year, Town Center Community Park East will be jumping to the sounds of Bluegrass music as the Santee Bluegrass Festival returns on Saturday, September 13. Featuring the sounds of local bands Box Canyon and The Tail Draggers, the Festival is a fundraiser for the Santee Park & Recreation Committee (SPARC), benefitting the Santee Teen Center, park improvement projects and the Recreation Scholarship Program. The Recreation Scholarship Program helps children, teens and seniors in Santee who might not otherwise be able to afford to participate in the city recreation programs.
The Santee Bluegrass Festival was the brainchild of SPARC Board Member Ken Fox, and the inaugural event raised more than $9000. From the beginning, this has been, in Fox’s words, a “classy but informal event that offers people a guaranteed fun evening at an affordable price.” The event has grown from 250 the first year to more than 1000 in its fourth year. Likewise the festival has seen an increase from about two dozen food establishments and a handful of wineries and breweries to a major celebration for foodies and lovers of fine beer and wine.
This year expect to see more than two dozen restaurants and caterers, ranging from Anthony’s Fish Grotto to Wings-n-Things. Don’t worry that your sweet tooth will have to go hungry, as desserts will be offered up from The Cupcake Store, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Cookies by Design, among others. The wineries will include a range of local and regional vintners, including Campo Creek Vineyards, Rock Canyon Vineyards and Ramona Ranch. Breweries will feature Santee’s own BNS Brewery, Butcher’s Brewing and Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, among others.
Many thanks go out to Diamond Sponsor Barona Resort & Casino, Gold Sponsors CGP Maintenance & Construction Services, SDG&E, Coles Fine Flooring and Vestar, and Silver Sponsor Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. The Santee Bluegrass Festival is a 21 and over event and identification is required. Check in begins at 4:30 p.m. and the gate opens at 5:30 p.m.
