One of the most haunted houses in the country was on fire for most of the day yesterday. Louisiana firefighters were called to the historical Myrtles Plantation to battle a blaze that started in the gift shop, the Bayou Buzz reported today.
The Myrtles Plantation has been said to be one of the most haunted houses in the United States. The historical home is located in St. Francisville, Louisiana.
Multiple fire departments were dispatched to St. Francisville on Wednesday at 8:03 pm to help with blaze. West Feliciana Fire Protection District No. 1 and the Zachary Fire Departments assisted St. Francisville with the scene. The first crew arrived at 8:07 pm and firefighters were able to contain the fire and eventually left the scene at 12:42 am.
“The people who run the place were very concerned it was going to get to the house. It’s probably not more than 10 feet separating them and there is a covered breezeway that actually connects the gift shop to the house,” St. Francisville Fire Chief Thomas Robinson said in a statement.
According to Robinson, the main house wasn’t damaged because crews were sent into the house with hoses to battle the fire from within. The gift shop had severe damage from smoke, fire, and water.
Fire investigators couldn’t speculate what the cause of the fire was right away. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating what caused the blaze.
“The fire started on the first floor of the gift shop and extended up into the attic and there was limited access to the attic. The consensus of opinion last night is the building is salvageable if the insurance company wants to fix it. There’s not much structural damage,” Robinson said.
Last winter, an ABC news reporter captured one of the Myrtle’s resident ghosts on camera. Reporter Vanessa Bolano was doing a segment about haunted locations at the plantation when something strange appeared onscreen with her.
“So we went to St. Francisville and visited the Myrtles Plantation, and while I’m back at the station reviewing our video, I noticed we may have captured one of the Myrtle’s supernatural residents fly through my stand-up,” Bolano said.
As Bolano reviewed the video, she noticed what appeared to be a spirit flying past her. She recorded her segment in the French Room, a room said to have the most paranormal activity on the property.
