Halloween is upon us again and after you and your little ghouls have gone out trick-or-treating, it’s time to sit down with that giant bag of candy and watch some awesome holiday-themed programming. However, you want a program that is not too scary for your children, but still has a Halloween feel to it so everyone can enjoy.
Luckily, there are plenty of Halloween-themed animated specials that will satisfy boys and girls of all ages, but aren’t too scary for most. These specials feature classic characters, facing things that go bump in the night, and show the true spirit of Halloween. Most of these videos can be found on popular video-streaming sites, such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, or Amazon Instant Video.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
One of the greatest animated specials of all-time, this classic “Peanuts” tale follows the adventures of Charlie Brown and his friends, as they celebrate Halloween. What makes this iconic is that it airs on network television every year and draws solid Neilson ratings, which goes to show no matter how old the tale, a good story can touch generations.
Halloween is Grinch Night (1977)
Following the success of Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” another animated tale was produced that featured mean-spirited and unfriendly reclusive as he comes down from Mt. Crumpit once a year on All Hallow’s Eve, and one Who that wants to see what happens on “Grinch Night,” despite the other Whos in Whoville staying indoors. You couldn’t get them to come out on a night like that “for six dollars and sixty cents!”
The Real Ghostbusters – The Halloween Door (1989)
Everyone’s favorite paranormal team is on the case in this Halloween special, based on the popular movie franchise. When the chairman of “Citizens United Against Halloween” fails to hire the Ghostbusters to assist him in getting rid of Halloween, he mistakenly opens up the Halloween Door and breaks the underworld’s ancient contract of imprisonment. It’s up to the Ghostbusters to stop the evil demon, Boogaloo, and save the world before the ghosts are free to roam the world forever.
Toy Story of Terror (2013)
The toys are back in town, as the stars from Disney’s popular movie series return for a terrifying new tale. When Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and their friends are left by accident in a roadside motel, the toys begin to disappear one by one under mysterious conditions. It’s up to Woody, Buzz and Jessie to find their friends before they suffer the same fate.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic – Luna Eclipsed (2011)
Everyone’s favorite ponies are getting ready for Nightmare Night, a night where everypony gets to dress up and get candy to ward off the evil Nightmare Moon. However, when the reformed Princess Luna arrives in Ponyville, she has a hard time fitting in after her long exile. It’s up to Twilight Sparkle and her friends to help Luna adjust to normal pony life and be the Princess of the night that she knows Luna can be.
