Metal band Five Finger Death Punch were in town over the weekend on their Wrong Side of Heaven Tour, with the ever popular Volbeat and special guests Hellyeah and Nothing More. It had been a year since Volbeat played in Lowell on the Rock Allegiance Tour and even longer for Five Finger Death Punch (or 5FDP as they are most often called) so the show ended up being sold out, despite being less then full at doors.
That was probably more due to the fact that the show began around 6:00 PM, with doors opening at 5:30 PM. There was a decent sized line formed outside, which stretched down beyond the bridge that crosses the river area, but nothing like it has seen in the past (if you’ve ever stood in that 3 block line then you know how crazy it can get). At the start of the show the whole venue was probably only a quarter filled; but hey, who wants to go to a metal show that early anyways?
Opening the evening was Nothing More, a band that a lot of people may not know, but are certainly worth checking out. Whether or not you like their music, their live performance is a very unique experience, incorporating multiple drums (which at one point all the members played simultaneously) and a rotating guitar stand that was placed center stage while they strummed and drummed (yes with sticks) on the strings. Words do it no justice, so if you want to see something truly unique, look up their videos. Their set which included a bass solo was ‘Christ Copyright’, ‘Mr. MTV’, ‘This Is The Time (Ballast)’ and ‘Salem (Burn the Witch)’.
The hard rocking Hellyeah took the stage next, giving a solid and energetic performance which seemed to get the audience revved up quite a bit more for the night. They played ‘Hellyeah!’, ‘Sangre por Sangre (Blood for Blood)’, ‘Demons in the Dirt’, ‘Drink Drank Drunk’, ‘Moth’, ‘Cross to Bier (Cradle of Bones)’, and ‘You Wouldn’t Know’.
As Volbeat prepared to come on, the arena really began to fill in with an excited audience, eager to see the night’s two headlining bands. Volbeat was great as they usually are, fun and energetic all the way through. One of the great things about seeing Volbeat live is that you know you are going to get a quality performance because of the level of showmanship they have created. They always look as if they’re genuinely having fun up there, they sound great and they know how to engage with their audience. This particular night that included bringing the kids in the audience up onstage for ‘Pool Of Booze’ (which is always changed to Chocolate) and a stage dive by vocalist Michael Poulson. They played 15 songs which included fan favorites ‘A Warrior’s Call’, ‘Sad Man’s Tongue’, Dusty Springfield cover ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’, and ‘Still Counting’.
Fiver Finger Death Punch closed out the evening with an all out, electrifying performance that had the crowd moving the whole time. Not only did their physical set have some cool lighting effects but drummer Jeremy Spencer had some awesome red lights in his kit, not to mention a killer glowing skeleton outfit on himself. Guitarist Jason Hook also had lights in his signature Gibson. They powered through hits like ‘Bad Company’, ‘Under and Over It’, ‘Lift Me Up’, ‘Burn MF’, ‘Coming Down’ and ‘Remember Everything’ as well as a killer drum solo from Spencer, before coming back for a 3 song encore of ‘Far from Home’ (which vocalist Ivan Moody sang in goose bump enducing a capella) ‘The Way Of The Fist’, ‘The Bleeding’ and ‘House Of The Rising Sun’ as their outro.
