SHARQ: Mother Egypt /Golden Nubia Photography Reception
Mother Egypt / Golden Nubia the World of the Nile from the Mediterranean to the Sahara is an exhibition of stunning photographs by award-winning news photographer Michael Nelson. These images of life, art, and architecture along the great river document both the rich and varied ancient cultural and the modern Islamic heritage of two countries / regions which have lived in a symbiotic relationship for millennial. Of unique interest are Nelson’s photos of the special art created by Nubian women, who as brides are expected to decorate the front of their new homes.
Nelson, an international photojournalist who has spent more than 30 years shuttling between the Middle East and the United States, started his career with UPI in Beirut, Lebanon in 1981 and has worked on stories ranging from the Gulf Wars, famines in Ethiopia, Super Bowl and the Oscars.
Curator Mona Sherif-Nelson is the daughter and heir of Nubia’s cultural leader Mohi Eddin Sherif, known as The Father of the Nubians. She has spent a lifetime studying, documenting, and promoting Nubian Culture and language, and attended the university in Cairo, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Art History. Her thesis focused on the art produced by Nubian women, who historically have been responsible for painting the fronts of their houses with symbols and narratives.
Sharq is a non profit educational art space devoted to the works of bicultural artists whose roots lie in the world of Sharq (theEast).

NELAart’s Second Saturday Gallery Night

Surely Lorraine front woman Anime Wong will perform along with special guests at the casual pre-Halloween event starting at 7:00pm. Wong was classically trained in piano from the age of 6. She achieved honors in the Music Teachers’ Association of California’s Certificate of Merit course level 8 and passed the Royal School of Music level 6. Her father bought her a Walkman around the age of 9 and the likes of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Love and Rockets, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and other religiously influential music artists infused her blood with a prescriptive blend of British and American rebellion.
