Flag Day: Everlasting and dignified flag disposal ceremonies at local festival

June 11, 2014

On Flag Day, June 14, 2014 at 11:45 a.m. at Worthington Park in downtown Logan, Ohio, the American Legion Post 78 will conduct two consecutive ceremonies during the annual Washboard Festival.

The first ceremony is the American Legion Post Everlasting Ceremony which honors the memory of local veterans who’ve died in the last year. The names of deceased comrades are read aloud and placed into a brazier located on a set of stacked rifles. After all names have been read a fire it lit and a moment of prayer is given by the chaplain and taps are played.

In observance of Flag Day a dignified disposal of unserviceable flags will be conducted. Each American flag is presented one at a time to American Legion officers for inspection and disposal. After inspecting the condition of each flag the post commander will honorably retire those no longer fit for service. The Chaplin gives prayer then the flag is saluted and burned.
