According to the Canadian Press on Saturday, the Calgary Flames acquired Brandon Bollig from the Chicago Blackhawks for the third round pick, 83rd overall in the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft. A left winger from St. Charles, Missouri, Bollig had seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 82 games last season.
Prior to last season, Bollig played in 43 regular season games with the Blackhawks, but had not registered a point. Bollig was on the Blackhawks team that won the 2013 Stanley Cup when the Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins in six games.
With the draft pick, the Blackhawks drafted Matheson Iacopelli, a right winger who played last season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League. Iacopelli, a native of Woodhaven, Michigan, had 41 goals and 23 assists for 64 points in only 58 games last season.
The Flames were also busy drafting players on Saturday. That list included goaltender Mason McDonald from the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (2nd round, 34th overall), right winger Hunter Smith from the Oshawa Generals (2nd round, 54th overall).
McDonald was impressive in the Top Prospects Game in Calgary this past January. While the Flames acquired Smith after sending goaltender Reto Berra during last season.
In the third round, 64th overall, the Flames drafted Brandon Hickey, a defenseman from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Spruce Grove Saints. Hickey, a native of Leduc, Alberta, was the first player chosen in the draft directly from the AJHL.
In the sixth round, the Flames drafted defenseman Adam Ollas Mattsson, a defenseman from Djugarden JR in Sweden. The Flames had the pick after sending Tim Jackman to the Anaheim Ducks on November 21, 2013.
Finally in the seventh round, the Flames drafted Austin Carroll from the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League. That pick was 184th overall.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, who are owned by the Calgary Flames, had three more players selected in the 2014 National Hockey League Draft after Jake Virtanen and Travis Sanheim were both drafted in the first round Friday night. Defenseman Ben Thomas was drafted in the fourth round, 119th overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Center Chase Lang was drafted in the sixth round, 167th overall, by the Minnesota Wild. Finally, center Radel Fazleev was drafted in the sixth round, 168th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers.
