Florida is a summertime destination for travelers from around the world who come to our cities to enjoy miles of beach, sparkling waters, and world famous theme parks. It’s also the time when residents of the Sunshine State have a bevy of festivals covering some of our favorite pastimes: great music and exceptional food.
For the month of August, both residents and visitors have a list of Florida events with a little “something-something” for everyone. If your travel itinerary brings you to the east coast, west coast, panhandle or the Keys, or if you’re looking for a weekend getaway from home, here’s just a taste of what you choose from that is sure to a memorable time.
South Florida Events
Start the month with Tastemakers of Delray Beach on August 7 and August 8 in downtown Delray Beach as over a dozen of the city’s top restaurants have creative cuisine for your tasting pleasure.
Key West has two events to please the palate in August. Scheduled for August 7-10, you won’t want to miss the Key West Lobsterfest with the lobster boil, street fair, lobster brunch, and the infamous Duval Crawl. If you can’t make the lobsterfest, on August 28-September 1, make plans to quench your thirst at the Fifth Annual Key West Brewfest at locations throughout the city. Savor the flavor of over 150 micro brews and cool beers along with pool parties and lots of tasting.
If blues is you choice of music, when the Rock ‘N’ Blues Fest takes the stage at the Broward Center for Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on August 15. The Edgar Winter Band, Johnny Winter Band, and musicians from Savoy Brown, Rare Earth, and Vanilla Fudge will rock the house.
North Florida Events
Chill out with cool music and hot barbecue at the Great American Blues Festival & BBQ Challenge on August 15-17 at Aaron Bessant Park in Panama City Beach. The music, brews, and barbecue will be flowing throughout the two-day fest.
Celebrate the grape at the Grape Harvest Festival in Tallahassee on August 23 at the FAMU Center for Viticulture. Explore 45 acres where tasty muscadine grapes grow. The event includes a 5k run, grape stomp, games, and kid’s activities, picking fresh grapes off the vine, and wine sampling.
Central Florida Events
The annual Wazoo beer fest takes place August 2 at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. The event includes live music, over 275 beer samplings, and interaction with some of the zoo’s residents.
Make your way to Ybor City on August 16 for the Summer of Rum Festival at the Cuban Club. Dancing, live music, daiquiris, and other refreshing libations are on the agenda for this event.
Old rockers will be part of celebrating a blast of the past at Hippiefest on August 16 in downtown Tarpon Springs. The 70s themed fest has it all with rock bands, food, libations and a vintage VW Bug show.
Put on your favorite costume and venture to Disney’s Villains Unleashed event at the Disney Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista. See 50 villains from the Disney vault along with performances, food, fireworks, dancing and more.
There’s more going on but this short list will give you a jump-start on making plans for August and ending summer on a high note.
