In light of the exclusion of Adrian Wyllie, Libertarian Party of Florida gubernatorial candidate, from a debate happening today, October 10, 2014, campaign supporters have organized a statewide sign wave to show support for Wyllie. The campaign received word from their attorney last Friday that Telemundo would not allow Wyllie into the debate held at their studios on October. Over forty Wyllie supporters are expected to protest Wyllie’s exclusion this morning at 9 a.m. Wyllie has filed a lawsuit to be included in today’s debate (see Suggested Links below for more information on the lawsuit).
The debate organizer, Telemundo, set no criteria for inclusion, made no attempt to contact or vet Wyllie as a candidate, and has denied all access to this debate, deeming it a “news event” for the Spanish-speaking community. This decision made by Telemundo does not only exclude Wyllie; it excludes the largest growing demographic of voters in the state of Florida. This exclusion promoted supporters around the state to organize a statewide event. A team of 20-30 supporters began the organization efforts and after several days and 50-60 hours of work they have put together events in each metro area around the state and every major market.
The Libertarian Party of Collier County will be joining in to support the statewide effort by waving signs at the intersection of Airport Road and Pine Ridge Road in Naples from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today. The Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County will be in three locations from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Delray Beach, Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens.
Jared Grifoni, Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Collier County stated, “Unfortunately, exclusion of Libertarian candidates has become part of the political tradition every election cycle but it is one that more and more people grow tired of every day. It is a tradition based not in fact, support levels, nor funding levels. It is certainly not based on party growth, excitement, or passion. Libertarians are excluded for one reason and one reason only: Libertarians are a danger to the establishment and political elite in both major parties..”
Grifoni continued, “We are proud to join in this statewide sign wave to show our support for our candidate for governor, Adrian Wyllie. We welcome all members of the community to join us, regardless of political affiliation, because this type of specifically targeted exclusion is inexcusable in a free nation. The people of Florida deserve better and the Libertarian Party of Collier County will continue to fight to represent those who believe in limited government, economic freedom, and the protection of individual rights.”
