Fame is the by-product of the regional STEM fair held in St. Lucie County which provided an academic showcase for individuals to participate in the 59th Annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida held in Lakeland this past April. The focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics makes STEM the new “Three R’s” or the basic ABC’s for the 21st century.
Science, all related science subjects and careers such as biology, chemistry, engineering, technology, mathematics, et al, is receiving much emphasis and increasing interest as areas that not only increase knowledge and understanding of our environment is becoming more and more imperative, but the technological and mathematical advances that appear to be never-ending are becoming vital forces in our security, economically and socially (inclusive also spiritually as breakthroughs in individual lives are being realized and recognized by the masses—a new and refreshing breed of men and women in the earth).
The latest frontiers of space travel and cyberspace confirms we need united minds to successfully conquer all to obtain the grace and respect of the universe. As Americans, we are generally looked to (and sometime admired) for being willing to set the pace which is why the strength of our education force must be fortified to inherit the trust that free women and men believe in for ourselves, our children and our children’s children around the world.
STEM education includes every field under the umbrella of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – everything from chemistry to physics, software design to trigonometry. Students from the St. Lucie County School District participated and made quite an impact on a continuum of categories ranging from zoology to biochemistry. Three of the 14 participants were invited to participate in the next level of competition at the 2014 International Science Fair in Los Angeles, California.
At the School Board Meeting on May 13th, students were recognized and presented plaques by Paul Reif, SLC Science Fair Coordinator, and Kerry Padrick, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. Listed here are those outstanding students that received recognition for their success.

Florida Foundation for Future Scientists
The Florida Foundation for Future Scientists (FFFS) is a statewide, non-profit organization authorized by the 1957 Legislature of the State of Florida to discover scientific and technical talent in the schools of Florida and to encourage the pursuit of careers in science and engineering. In meeting its obligations, the FFFS promotes and administers the State Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) of Florida.
