Billy Barnhart was looking forward to being just the Offensive Coordinator when he was hired two months ago at Towns County (GA).
But after being hired as coordinator by former Kingston head coach Blair Harrison, plans changed for Barnhart.
Harrison found another coaching job at St. Martin’s Episcopal in Meltarie, Louisiana and will serve the double capacity as head football coach and Athletic Director.
For Harrison, this will be his fourth head coaching job in the last four years as he was at Brookstone (GA, 2011), Kingston (2012) and Towns County (2013).
Now Barnhart has been hired as the new head football coach at Towns County, a year after leading Whitwell to a 5-5 record.
“It’s been a really quick process,”
Barnhart said. “At first, I was really excited about stepping back and just having the responsibilities of offensive coordinator but when Blair left, I wanted to get back to being a head coach again.
Barnhart spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Whitwell and despite a 7-23 overall record, the Tigers won their last four games to finish the season 5-5, barely missing the Class 2A playoffs.
Barnhart will run the Wing T offense at Towns the same as Harrison did and the players should be pretty comfortable with both the offensive and defensive schemes.
“I think not having to change the offense and the schemes is a big advantage for the kids,” Barnhart said. “We have really had a good month of practice and in really excited about the season at hand.”
