The fossil record gives us an account of fossilized animals and plants that are found in layers of strata. Some fossils no doubt date from before or after the Flood, but the vast majority are the direct results of a Flood process that was global in extent.
During the Flood, sea bottom dwellers were transported and buried in marine sediments. As the Flood, encroached farther and farther onto land sediments would be increasingly terrestrial, entombing land animals along with the abundant marine creatures. All were originally living at the same time, and then died and were buried in successive Flood activities.
There is two sides to the fossil record debate. Let us summarize the predictions from the Evolution model and the Creation model as they relate to the fossil record.
Evolution’s predictions :
(1). All things originated and developed through time, chance, and natural processes based on the properties of matter.
(2). Basic types of organisms developed in stages from previously existing types.
(3). Basic types proliferated overtime.
(4). Complexity increased overtime.
(5). Living things were buried and fossilized by processes possible today (uniformitarianism).
Creation’s predictions :
(1). All basic types originated abruptly through supernatural processes (God created them).
(2). Organisms diversified within limits from original created kinds.
(3). Each kind experienced either stasis or extinction over time.
(4). Complexity was present from the start (Cambrian Explosion).
(5). Burial and fossilization occurred through extreme processes that are unlikely today (Noah’s Worldwide Flood)(Genesis 6-9)(2 Peter 3:6).
The concept of time especially enters that discussion when considering fossils. Evolution charts evolutionary change according to time represented on what has become known as the geologic column. Each of its eons-long epochs, periods, and eras is referenced to the particular lifeforms that are believed to have lived during that time, as represented by their fossils. They called these type of fossils, “index fossils” and are used to identify the particular time which they lived.
But as paleontologists and fossil hunters were finding more and more fossils, they discovered that the fossils of supposedly older rock layers were being found with fossils of more modern animals. Case in point, crocodile fossils have been found in strata dated as old as the dinosaurs. And yet they looked just like modern crocodiles. But even something that is more amazing, they found birds, mammals and reptiles with dinosaur fossils in the same rock layer (strata). But something even more amazing than this, is the finding of “living fossils”. These are plants and animals that were thought to have been extinct for “millions of years”. For example, the coelacanth fish which was thought to be extinct some 65 million years ago is being found in the oceans around South Africa and Indonesia today.
The fossil record leaves an inescapable impression on the honest observer. It certainly does not communicate the macro-evolutionary picture. The record of the past written in stone contains no evidence that any particular animal ever morphed into a fundamentally different type of animal
On the other hand, the fossil record does communicate the sudden appearance of basic types, complete with all the features that characterize them. There is lots and lots of variety on display. But variety is not evolution. Dogs are still dogs, and cats are still cats with neither of them being related. They did not originate by mutations in a different type of common ancestor, nor did one come from the other. And this is what the fossils show!
