Lest you think it’s too late to spring for a luxurious dadworthy gift, consider this: Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans spoils celebrities, politicians and pops of all shapes, stripes and tastes.
If your dad is like most, firstly he will be impressed that this thirty-year-old masterpiece has entertained the likes of Bill Clinton, Miss Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z and Beyonce. Oprah rented the Presidential Suite for two and a half months, where Clinton also stays of course (separately), says Thea Wall with the hotel’s marketing team.
Classically styled in English decor, the grand building looks far older than its relatively young age, and the lobby feels like the setting for a romantic Bogie and Bacall film. Windsor Court is known for its signature bouquet of 144 fresh pink roses, a scent so intoxicating Dad’ll want to bring Mom back for her day, too.
Besides the plush look, the hotel boasts a museum’s worth of original fine art including works by this examiner’s favorite, Gainsborough, Frith, Joseph Nash and others. All are English painters, of course, with an emphasis on Windsor settings, and the hotel even offers an art tour. Sculpture and other art also grace the premises.
The rooms’ themes are also classically British. Even if you can’t afford the hefty price tag for Oprah’s suite, the summer months offer an option for every budget. A sliding scale means more wiggle room for Dad to enjoy dinner in the stunning Grill Room, an experience so divine that he’ll propose to Mom again.
From its gorgeous chandeliers to the New Orleans-themed mural of Harry Connick Jr., Louis Armstrong and other local lights, it’s an experience in itself. And this examiner indulged in a delicious chargrilled cheeseburger and Ginger Mint Julep in the Polo Club Lounge, adjoining (see photo, slideshow). Ask for Daniel the waiter; he’s a doll.
As if all of this isn’t enough, a swim on the fourth floor’s roof of this 24-story luxury hotel will prove as relaxing as that massage Dad is about to get in the hotel spa. Then it’s back to the most stunning room I’ve seen outside of the Mandarin in San Francisco. And by night, Pop can grab Mama for some sassy jazz or blues downstairs, and by day poke around the hotel’s signature boutique or enjoy a spot of proper English tea at the service downstairs.
For classic dads, this is one of NOLA’s most appealing and memorable hotel experiences.
Some of us won’t even wait for another holiday to go back.
Happy Father Day to all the dads. We do appreciate all you do.
