So far the only real threat ISIL has posed to this country is the killing of American journalists in Syria and Iraq after they were kidnapped on assignment. However, if you listen to the likes of Fox News’ Judge Jeanine Pirro or Sean Hannity you would think all Americans should be crawling under their beds because the big, bad, ISIL terrorists are coming for us. Pirro ranting “America faces the single biggest threat in her more than 200 year history, worse than what we faced in World War I,World War II, the attack on Pearl Harbor and Al Qaeda on 9/11. I’m telling you, ISIS – if not already on American soil – will be here.” Really Judge? Take a deep breath. For starters, ISIL lacks anything near the military firepower Hitler had at his disposal so a conquest or “caliphate” of the Middle-East, Europe, or the world anytime soon is simply out of the question. Secondly, as for Americans fighting for ISIS, U.S. officials have been inflating the numbers. Matthew Olsen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, confirmed that 100 is the total count of the various Americans fighting in Syria and not a count of those fighting for ISIS. The Pentagon estimating the figure to be more like a dozen. So yes, even a dozen is still too many but just because these angry, suicidal jackasses are fighting with ISIS, that doesn’t automatically translate into an imminent threat to the American homeland (by the way, ISIS is sometimes referred to as ISIL or the Islamic State – well except for the fact that the Islamic State is an insurgent group without the control of a state-apparatus, didn’t gain power in a democratic election, and so they don’t have their own state.)
You would think by now that our politicians and media outlets would have learned a valuable lesson on fear mongering the citizenry, going on about “greatest threats” and “imminent danger”. This is exactly what the the Bush Administration did that got us into the Iraq War. In fact, we wouldn’t even be discussing the threat of ISIL if it wasn’t for our politicians and the American people (well, some anyway) being conned by Bush and company on the “imminent threat” of Iraq having “WMDs” and potentially giving them to Osama Bin Laden. The threat turned out to be bogus but not be before it cost America and Iraq thousands of lives and almost drained our National Treasury. Thankfully, this type of fear mongering drama, albeit a specialty at Fox News, at times only goes so far before it’s called out. When Sean Hannity screams, “How could you label the beheading in Oklahoma workplace violence?!!!” Our FBI would beg to differ. It appears that after an in-depth investigation of the incident by government terrorism experts (not opinions offered up by right wing pundit, ex-lawyers, and judges on FOX) they concluded this particular episode was more likely one of a disgruntled half-radicalized nitwit who got fired and was looking for revenge against his employer. That he was a recent convert to Islam and posted some photos of Osama on his facebook page apparently didn’t automatically qualify him as a terrorist. Moreover, between the news media and social networks in a frenzy over “caliphates” and ISIS beheadings, most likely he copycatted the incident. The FBI probably likely saw this case as no different then school kids copycatting the Columbine murders. Was Timothy McViegh a Christian terrorist? Hell, he even had a giant Jesus tattooed on his chest.
Instead of listening to Sean Hannity and worry about the threat of ISIL coming to our shores and beheading us in our beds, why not talk about the fatalities that occur every day in the bedrooms of America when children find loaded guns. There were 12,000 fatalities last year from Americans murdering Americans with guns, 500 of which, were children and babies finding loaded guns in their homes. Why worry sick about ISIL, when we have Americans going into movie theaters with assault rifles and slaughtering innocent people, or going into elementary schools and slaughtering innocent children and teachers. Why isn’t Sean Hannity talking about the threat of mentally ill people gaining access to guns in this country? Is it because the majority are white and not Muslim? Maybe it doesn’t fit the Fox playbook. It appears that a bigger threat to America is our own people. There were 500 workplace murders last year committed by Americans from all backgrounds and religions. What happened in Oklahoma was horrible and it shouldn’t happen, but to turn it into a Muslim terrorist thing and scare the general public is wrong and irresponsible.
Americans should always be vigilant and mindful of threats posed by extremists. That said, in all likelihood those treasonous Americans fighting over in Syria and Iraq will not be coming home for a major attack. The Middle East will likely be their final resting place as it should be. Moreover, you can be rest assured that ISIS is not amassing an army of Ebola monkeys and they’re not building a giant laser on Mars. So please turn off Fox News.
