Frayser high school will have a new look in 2014.
Frayser will no longer be the school’s name as it will be known as Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory School.
MLK Prep will no longer be part of the Memphis City school district but will be a charter school operated by Frayser Community Schools.
The school is the second Memphis city school to be taken over and made into a charter school this year with Fairley being controlled by Green Dot out of Los Angeles starting in 2014.
“We are a local group and that is very important to us,” Frayser Community Schools Founder and CEO Bobby White said.
“We are out to see that the students strive for the best academically and athletically.”
White should know what faces the Frayser community as he is a 1990 Frayser graduate.
According to White, 82 schools are in the bottom five percent academically in the state of Tennessee with 68 of those in the Memphis area.
Also changing will be leadership of the football program as Greg Howard resigned and has been named the new Athletic Director at nearby Trezevant high school.
He will also help out the Bear football team as an assistant coach.
Former Ridgeway Defensive Coordinator Jesse Allen will take the reigns as the new head football coach at MLK Prep.
“I’m excited about Coach Allen taking over the football program and with his experience and knowledge, he will do a good job,” White said.
Allen has been a head coach before as he was at Wooddale in 2007.
He has been at Ridgeway, Wooddale and also Hamilton as well.
Allen starred collegiately at the University of Memphis as a linebacker from 1993 to 1996.
