Whoa! It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly twenty years since the popular 90’s family sitcom Blossom ended its five season run. Thanks to The HUB Network, it’s time to relive the era of shredded jean, funky hats, floral prints and single-word catchphrases as Blossom makes its HUB debut. To celebrate the new syndication of an old favorite the HUB recently gathered series stars Mayim Bialik, Joey Lawrence, Michael Stoyanov and Jenna von Oÿ in the studio to reminisce about the show and catch up with each other. The results of that long-overdue reunion of sorts will air between a Blossom marathon beginning at 9p.m./8p.m. central on Friday, July 11.
When Blossom first aired, I was admittedly not their target audience, but I tuned in nonetheless. It’s just that funny. When I heard about the recent reunion, I reached out to my friend, and current Nashville resident, Jenna von Oÿ, who played Blossom’s bestie, Six during the entire five season run of the show to see what she had to say about reuniting with the rest of the cast.
“The recent Blossom reunion was the first time the four of us had been in the same room since the show ended nearly 20 years ago! There have been a lot of changes since then…including the fact that most of us have ditched our flowered hat collections. I hope,” laughed Jenna.
Of course it’s not the first time some of them have gotten together over the years. A few years back, Mayim and Joey were featured in an Old Navy ad campaign. Jenna also reminded me that she, Mayim and Michael reunited on a 2010 episode of the Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher FOX sitcom, ‘Til Death.”A year or so before that, Joey, Mayim, & I were together for the release of the first two seasons of Blossom on DVD. It’s tough to get us all in one place these days!,” Jenna explained.
She also told me that she and Mayim speak frequently, and even interviewed one another for their respective mommy blogs. That’s right, both Mayim and Jenna are moms. CLICK HERE to check out Jenna’s interview with Mayim.
In the nearly two decades since starring together on Blossom, all four stars have continued to flourish. These days Mayim, who played the title role of Blossom Russo, can be seen in the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory as Amy Farrah Fowler, the eager but nerdy girlfriend to Jim Pearson’s Sheldon. Just yesterday, Mayim received an Emmy nomination for the role.
Joey Lawrence, who played Blossom’s brother Joey, has had a string of TV hits, including Brotherly Love, American Dreams, Half & Half and his current ABC Family sitcom Melissa & Joey, which co-stars Melissa Joan Hart, yet another teen star who has successfully transition into adult stardom.
Michael Stoyanov followed up his Blossom role as the eldest Russo sibling, Anthon, with recurring roles on Beverly Hills 90210 and Safe Harbor. He’s also enjoyed a busy career in more dramatic fare with appearances on everything from Prison Break and Monk to The Mentalist and Justified. Behind the scenes, Anthony returned to his comedic roots having written for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and MADtv among others.
As for Blossom’s bestie, Six Le Meure, Jenna went on to star in the TV sitcom, The Parkers, as well as a string of TV movies and weekly guest spots. She also did voice work on the animated series Pepper Ann and What’s With Andy? as well as the third installment in the hugely popular Dr. Dolittle franchise. Not one to limite herself, Jenna has also enjoyed big-screen roles having made her movie debut in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July just a year before Blossom. More recently, She co-starred alongside John Schneider in the touching family film Lukewarm and enjoyed a memorable turn in the award-winning short film The 30-Day Challenge. As I mentioned earlier, Jenna now calls Nashville her home. It was actually at a screening for The 30-Day Challenge at The Nashville Film Festival that Jenna and I reconnected. Since moving to Nashville, Jenna has married and started a family (thus the aforementioned mommy blog, The Cradle Chronicles). Jenna is also quite the songbird. In 2007, she released her debut album, Breathing Room and followed that up in 2009 with Coffee & Men: An EP for Childish Adults.
Friday’s Blossom reunion on The HUB is just the latest in a recent string of TV gigs for Jenna. Just last week, she was guest host on the syndicated daytime series Better Show and on Tuesday, July 15, she’s trade lives with reality-TV star Jill Zarin on the newest episode of ABC’s Celebrity Wife Swap. Something tells me Zarin might be in for more than she bargained for when she trades a cush life in The Hamptons for Jenna’s Nashville life as a wife and mom. Which reminds me. Jenna just revealed that she’s expecting baby number two, so it looks like life will continue to be one new adventure after another for Blossom’s BFF.
This weekend’s Blossom marathon on The HUB kicks off Friday, July 11 at 9p.m./8p.m. central with Blossom Blossoms, the episode that started it all. At 9:30, it’s My Sister’s Keeper in which Blossom’s Dad, Nick (Ted Wass) is hesitant to let his little girl go to prom with a boy with a bit of a reputation. Next, at 10p.m Blossom is in charge of the house when her Dad gets a gig on a cruise chip in Who’s in Charge Here?. At 10:30 and 11, Season Two is represented with Blossom-A Rocumentary and The Letter. The HUB’s Blossom marathon wraps at 11:30 with Season Three’s The Making of the President. In case you miss any of the marathon, The HUB will repeat it immediately follow, at 12 midnight, then again at 3 a.m.
On Monday, July 14, Blossom takes its regular spot on The HUB’s nightly schedule with two back-to-back episodes each weeknight beginning at 10 p.m./9 p.m. central.
