So how many bottles of wine are typically in one barrel? The best way to find out is to sign up and play in the 2nd Annual Wine Barrel Open at Greenhorn Creek Resort in Angels Camp. A “barrel full of wine bottles” will be the grand prize at the tournament to be held Nov. 6, 2014. Though it should be a barrel of fun, it is not exactly a barrel of wine. The winning team will pop the corks on 36 bottles of locally produced wine which will include Zinfandels, Barberas, Syrahs and other varietals. The format is a four person scramble and costs $150 per player and is open to the public. The event will conclude with dinner and a wine tasting. To register or for more information go to www.greenhorncreek.com.
The George Archer Memorial Foundation for Literacy is once again hosting it’s “Stroke of Genius” Pro-Am Tournament on Monday, October 27, 2014 at Penninsula Golf And Country Club in San Mateo. Archer, who was introduced to his wife Donna by Sacramento based amateur Verne Callison while playing in a State Fair tournament in Sacramento, was unable to read or write. He suffered in silence throughout his career and upon his death his family was finally able to let the public know of George’s illiteracy. Longtime friend Dave Stockton will be on hand along with Dan Boever who bills himself as a long drive specialist but is equal parts comedian and trickshot artist. Proceeds from the event will go to promote literacy efforts. Check out www.georgearcherfoundation.org or call 650-340-1761 for information on playing. This event sells out so act now.
The PGA Tour’s Fry’s.com Open is next week at Silverado Resort and Spa in nearby Napa. The tournament is now the opening event on the 2014-2015 schedule and players will accrue FedEx Cup points. That’s a plus for attracting a good field. Some of the early entrants include former U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, Robert Allenby, Tim Clark, Rory Sabbatini and even Lee Westwood, fresh off another Ryder Cup victory. Single day and week long tickets are available but it is best to go to www.frysopengolf.com.
