“General Hospital” has had plenty of certifiable criminals in the years it has been on, but there is just something special about Dr. Liesl Obrecht. Fans seem to connect with Dr. Obrecht, even if it is just them loving to hate her. The writers introduced the character in 2012, and there is still so much more fans need to know about her connections to Port Charles.
Kathleen Gati is the actress who plays Dr. Liesl Obrecht. Gati graciously allowed the Examiner to ask her questions about her work on “General Hospital” and other projects she is currently involved in.
Q: What is the best part of playing the criminal mastermind that is Liesl Obrecht?
A: “The best part is that she has so many colors to her personality, it always stays exciting for me as an actor. I never know what each script I receive will bring for Dr. Obrecht, and of course, for me to bring her alive. I love her seriousness, her heart, her coldness, her matter-of-fact toughness, but most of all I love her humor. It makes it so fun for me, and I think it takes the edge off her character. I am also enjoying Dr. Obrecht trying to be a loving mother. I emphasize the word “trying”!!”
Q: You have appeared on other soaps like “All My Children” and “The Young and The Restless,” are soaps your passion or do you just take roles as they come?
A: “Honestly, as an actor, I always take roles as they come, because each role brings its own beauty and excitement, whether it is on stage, in a movie or on television. Having said that, my first break was on All My Children and I used to make up soap opera stories when I was a kid…so you could say I have a soft spot for soaps. And I am madly in love with this character, Dr. Obrecht!! Probably my most favorite character I have ever portrayed in my nearly 30 years as an actor!”
Q: What is your favorite story line from “General Hospital,” past or present?
A: “It’s a tough question! I totally loved the Nurses Ball, too much fun, but I really enjoyed those “sisterly” scenes with Donna Mills in prison…I got to play myself!! But recently I have enjoyed discovering relationships with my two beautiful children. It’s like peeling a banana! One layer of emotion at a time!!Who knows what’s next!”
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the upcoming projects you are doing?
A: “I just finished shooting a film called “Lifeline”. I portrayed an 80 year old troubled Russian fortune teller. It is tragic, humorous, grotesque. Loved it! I do have a few other film projects coming up, but right now I am shooting several episodes of General Hospital…stay tuned for more fun times with Dr. Obrecht!”
Q: Do people recognize you and refer to you as Dr. Obrecht?
A: “I am recognized daily at the store, at the gym, in restaurants and people have been very gracious and told me they love to hate me! I really appreciate the love! They look at me as their friend, because we are daily in their homes and it touches me that they are so warm and personable with me.”
Q: You joined “General Hospital” in 2012, was it awesome to celebrate 50 years on air with the cast in 2013?
A: “It was an honor to be part of the 50th year celebrations. I wish all the fans could have been there too. It is a very special feeling to be part of a show that has been entertaining the audience for decades. I get letters from fans telling me how they have grown up with this show in their homes since they were kids. I feel personally responsible to help continue this beautiful legacy.”
Q: Do you have an official Facebook fan page or a fan club fans can join?
A: “There is an official fan club that fans can join with info on my live events, links to all my websites and more at: www.KathleenGatiFanClub.com. Also, I share my personal Facebook page with fans: Kathleen Gati. And there have been a few Facebook fan pages started by fans: ‘True Fans of Kathleen Gati’ and ‘We Love Dr. O’. I am also on Twitter: @gatitweets”
Q: Any GH spoilers you can give fans?
A: “Well, I hope Dr. Obrecht gets to do some warming up with her children, and possibly some lovey-dovey stuff…but with her, ya never know!!
But I can say for sure, hold onto your hats…LOTS of fun things coming up!”
