Bertram and Carol Hayes-Davis have sent out an invitation for guests to sail along on a special Jefferson Davis Cruise aboard the famous American Queen Steamboat on the mighty Mississippi River. This exclusive tour of Jefferson Davis sites will take place December 12-20, 2014.
The Beauvoir Foundation announced that this cruise will be a nine day excursion, round-trip, starting from New Orleans, Louisiana, with stops at significant Jefferson Davis sites along the Mississippi River. These special patrons will receive all of the fabulous amenities included in the American Queen Package. As an added bonus, this all-inclusive tour will be led by Bertram Hayes-Davis—the great, great, grandson of Jefferson Davis—and his wife, Carol. This trip of a lifetime will help support the efforts of the Beauvoir Foundation.
Here are some of the historic locations guests will visit on the cruise.
New Orleans will feature a tour of Davis sites in the Crescent City on the first day before boarding the American Queen by Heath Lee, author of the new book, “Winnie Davis Daughter of the Lost Cause”.
St. Francisville will include a visit to Rosemont Plantation, the boyhood home of Jefferson Davis and Locust Grove cemetery, grave site of his first wife.
Natchez will offer a visit to the Briars, where he married Varina–and Jefferson College, where he attended school.
Vicksburg includes an opportunity to participate in both Jefferson Davis and Ulysses S. Grant events. You will be invited to a seminar in the Old Courthouse Museum and Anchuca will host a reception.
Baton Rouge will feature a talk featuring Jefferson Davis biographer, William Cooper, and a presentation from the Papers of Jefferson Davis, LSU Press, with a reception at The Capitol State Museum.
Plantation Road and Oak Alley Louisiana offer visits to many magnificent plantation homes. In addition to the historic sites, there will also be talks, films and fun Jefferson Davis activities on the boat. Jefferson Davis, Varina Davis, Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Grant re-enactors will also join the group on the tour. Come experience Christmas with décor, music and holiday food.
There are only 50 cabins available for this themed cruise making it a very intimate and historic vacation experience for all guests aboard the American Queen. It will be like taking a step back in time as they “teach the history and significance of Jefferson Davis and his life on the Mississippi River.”
And as you know…where there is history, there is always a little bit of mystery!
