Music is the universal language that brings people together and what better way to express your love, appreciation and good will toward others than with the gift of music. This holiday season take a stroll through the aisle of vintage rock, classic jazz and underground alternative beats that take you back in time.
Stinkweeds record store is a time capsule infused with psychedelic album covers, original classic rock collections and hard to find musical gems. Kimber Lanning, owner of Stinkweeds has been catering to a unique cliental since 1987. Lanning first job was working in a record store when she was only 15 years old. By the time she was 19 she had an extensive record collection due to frequent trips driving to Los Angeles and going to all the record stores out there.
At the age of 19, Lanning opened Stinkweeds and for 27 years she has been living her passion. “It just became obvious to me that this is what I should be doing. My father was a jazz musician and my grandfather was a jazz pianist so music was a big part of my life” Lanning said.
Record store guy Dario Miranda has been working at Stinkweeds for 10 years and has seen his fair share of every type of music lover through the years. What’s old is new again and vinyl records are hot, the demographic of customers buying vinyl today ranges from teenagers to someone in their 90’s. “We have people coming in who were around during the days of vinyl so they are looking for things on vinyl again. They want to re-experience that again, it’s just kind of that thing that’s in the air right now were everybody is recognizing the difference of listening to music on vinyl” Miranda said.
Stinkweeds have carved out a niche audience for people that really research their music if you google records in Phoenix they are the first to appear at the top of the search engine. Word of mouth is another way they have built their customer base and this has been an asset for their customers who have moved out of state. “Others used to live here and moved away and they still order from us so I may have a few customers that might send us $50 bucks a month and say just get me something you know I would like and they trust us to pick out music for them because we’ve know them for so long” Lanning said.
Every type of music you can think of is available on cd or vinyl records at Stinkweeds and the best part they sell record players too. They also support local bands by selling their band cd’s on a commission bases. Stinkweeds have over 80 listening stations and they change them out every month.
Looking to make some extra cash for the holiday season you can bring in your records or cd’s and sell them. “We just brought a huge collection from a guy who was living in New York in the 70’s he had a lot of original Rollin Stones records and original David Bowie records at least one a month we will get a really big collection that’s great but pretty much someone will come in with a crate of records and we go through it and pick what we want there is really no limit to what we will buy it just depends on what it is” Miranda said.
So this holiday season step away from the hustle of commercial store bought traffic. Get that one-of-a-kind musical gift at Stinkweeds where you can fill out a little sheet of paper and put together a list for Santa. “We go above and beyond to do special orders and to allow our customers a sure fire way to get exactly what they want. We also make people feel really comfortable in here I think a lot of record stores are too cool for school and we are really down to earth in here and we want to help people find the music they love no matter what kind of music that is” Lanning said.
