A neighborhood cookout ended abruptly with the shooting of an 8-year-old girl Saturday night at an apartment complex in southwest Atlanta. And police on Sunday were still searching for the suspects as well as a motive for the shooting.
The investigation began around 8:45 p.m. when officers responded to The Retreat apartments at 3390 Fairburn Road after getting a report of a person shot, according to Atlanta police. When officers arrived they found the 8-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.
Police are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, however, witnesses told officers that during the party some individuals began shooting, Jones said. Security guards who were at the scene said there were at least two suspects who fled the scene in a white Nissan Altima, Jones said. They described one of the suspects as a black man, 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds, she said. He was last seen wearing a t-shirt and blue basketball shorts, police said. The could not provide a detailed description of the second suspect. It was also unclear if both men fired during the event.
Police have not released any details on how many people were at the party or how many shots were fired. It’s also unclear what type of weapon was used and who was the target.
The child was transported to the South Fulton Medical Center, according to media reports. Her condition was not readily available Sunday.
