One does not have to look far from where this writer lives to understand that if what the good people of Porterville, California and the surrounding neighbors are going through concerning the severe natural disaster of the water drought, so if it is not climate change; then what is it? It is so bad here that, “Volunteers deliver cases of water to homes in East Porterville on Friday. Nearly 1,000 people whose wells have gone dry due to drought received an emergency allotment of bottled water Friday.” (A.P. 2014). These are my neighbors and friends of friends who not only under extreme drought with no water for 7 families that I know of for months on end off of K street, most a few weeks; they also cannot run their swamp coolers, because swamp coolers needs water; and today the temperature is going to be 101. KMPH news reported that one family is going to leave after four-months of no water, so they will be displaced due from a natural disaster. It sounds like hurricane Katrina, Charley and other natural disasters. This is a major natural disaster, and if one of my readers would like to delve deeper into this horrible situation, just Google, ‘Families without water Porterville, California,’ or Farms without water Central Valley.’ Also please Google Asia Citrus Psyllid; as most of the state is under quarantine due to the bug that will wipe out all of California’s citrus crops. This is epic, and as many scientist believe; this is the worst thing to happen since the Dust Bowl. The CDC recognizes this; please read the 24 page report on, Climate and Health Technical Report Series Climate and Health Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/climateandhealth/pubs/AssessingHealthVulnerabilitytoC… “If the state continues on this path, there may have to be thoughts about moving people out, said Lynn Wilson, academic chair at Kaplan University and who serves on the climate change delegation in the United Nations.” (Koba, M. 2014). Lynn Wilson was right, people are leaving in droves. Climate change alongside what mankind has does to the ozone layer concerning carbon emission; just to name a small few; is why California specifically is in this gigantic mess, and large corporations, and rich men and women are banking on the downfall of the California crops. This is reality, and the reality is; where this writer works, and other big daddy money farmers I know; once their water is off; they will go spend as much time as they need to in their other rich homes elsewhere, and who can blame them, however, this area has mostly very poor people living here, “Living in poverty means much more than dollar levels communicate. Yet, during the past six years the number of poverty stricken Americans not only has increased, but their income has dropped below previous levels.” (Drabek, E.T, 2014). This author therefore speaks the truth in the pages to follow, and capitalist who should be, ‘endorsing solutions,’ do not for their own capital gains. The stakeholders are making bank selling water at such outrageous prices, while the shareholder; the poor people who pay the taxes, are the ones suffering in a gigantic way. This writer knew people had it bad here, and knew this months ago, however did not realize that people whom have been without water for months; was afraid to tell anyone; because they fear the local government so much, and were and are afraid their children will be taken away from them. “Along with experiencing inconvenience and thirst, some residents have been reluctant to speak up about being waterless because they are afraid their landlords will evict them or social workers will take their children away, The Recorder reported.” (A.P. 2014). If people are afraid to tell anyone that they do not have water, they will be stressed at work, and at home, and what type of living is that? In the link provided within the post, the maps are provided by the UK Met office, the UK foreign offices together with universities around the globe, http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate-guide/climate-change/impacts/human-d… in my opinion this many people, cannot be wrong; can they? Global warming is both, ‘natural disaster,’ and ‘man-made disaster, but how can the human race fix the problems? The answer is basic; start with one’s own community. State with small steps such as recycling, pulling out our yards and replacing them with rocks, or something that does not require water. In Arizona people in homes put out beautiful displays of rocks and cactuses. Some people in California are even painting their grass and KMPH news reported this paint is not harmful to animals, and especially the environment.
What are your communities going through concerning what you might feel is due to climate change? How can you help your community by healing and helping the planet? Please share all your thoughts, and ask questions; as there are no dumb questions, and everyone has a story to tell.
