Don’t look now, but the sport of golf is going to the dogs. That’s actually a good thing, though, especially when it’s “Fore the Bassets.” This great charity golf event in Drums, Pa, now in its fifth year, is lovingly presided over by basset lovers John and Mandy Shema. Mandy recently took time out of preparing for the event to chat with me.
“Fore the Bassets” tees off at with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 7. There’s still plenty of time to get your registration in and, if you forget, Mandy says it’s okay. You can show up between 7 and 7:45 a.m. and just register.
I asked Mandy how this whole thing got started. As I suspected, a basset hound started it all. The Shemas adopted Bubba in 2009. John is the General Manager of the Sand Springs Country Club in Drums, Pa. and the two of them thought it would be fun and a fitting tribute to their beloved Bubba. The response was so great, they decided to make it an annual event.
We talked about the rewards of putting on this event. It’s a lot of hard work and it takes a lot of time. Is it worth it? Yes, it is. The reward is helping the hounds. Mandy and John are huge basset lovers. The proceeds go to Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue which saves and adopts out hounds in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. A lot of people don’t realize how expensive rescue is. Many of Tri-State’s hounds come up from the southern states which further increases costs.
Since the event is “Fore the Bassets,” will there be hounds at the event? Mandy answered with a resounding yes. As a matter of fact, there are two adoptions already scheduled to take place that day. There will be several adoptable dogs there, too. Rumor has it there may be an appearance of Flash the Wonder Dog who paw-painted the shirts for the 2014 BoardWaddle!
Two of Mandy’s dogs will be there. Currently the Shemas have Leroy, Winston, Laney and London. Registrants and volunteers can bring their dogs, too. If you want to work the event, there will be dog sitters available.
Sadly, Bubba passed away on Aug. 20, 2013, John Shema’s birthday. This year’s “Fore the Bassets” is dedicated to his loving memory.

Our time was growing short, so I asked Mandy what her dream was, what she would like to see “Fore the Bassets” become. It didn’t take her long to answer, “A full field of 118 golfers.”
Let’s help her achieve that dream. Fill out your forms and get registered now. Sand Springs Country Club is located at 10 Clubhouse Drive in Drums, Pa. 18222. You can call 570-384-3483 for more information.
So grab your clubs and head on up to Drums. You’ll have a great day of golf and you’ll be helping to save adorable basset hounds all at the same time. It just doesn’t get any better than that!
