The Goodblanket family, the American Indian Movement (AIM) of Central Oklahoma, NW Oklahoma AIM, AIM of Central Texas S.P.R.I.R.I.T ( Society to Protect Indigenous Rights and Indigenous Treaties),United Urban Warrior Society, Idle No More Oklahoma, Great Plains Tar Sands Resistance, Anonymous and OU Students for a Stateless Society, along with many others participated in a rally at the Oklahoma State Capitol on Friday, August 26th from 10a until 4p.
Focus of the rally was the global issue of reactivity and excessive use of force resulting in anything from unwarranted intimidation to irreparable harm or death in Oklahoma from various law enforcement groups.
A significant contribution, and the host family at this event included the parents, relatives and friends of Ma-hi-vist Goodblanket, an 18 year old Cheyenne-Arapaho tribal member was shot dead in December 2013, seven times per the autopsy. https://www.facebook.com/events/273597516179186/
This Cheyenne-Arapaho newsletter identifies recent events for the Goodblanket family, which preceded this rally. It also notes the high rates of suicide amongst native youth, ages 10-24, and cites an absence of exact numbers by tribe, though Cheyenne-Arapaho had a rash of youth suicide deaths in the last few years in Oklahoma. http://www.c-a-tribes.org/Websites/michaelwood/images/Sept._15,_2014.pdf
Repeatedly, rally speakers from the above groups, the Oklahoma ACLU, the NAACP of Oklahoma, the NAACP of OKC and the EVE Project were cleanly respectful of the increased violence directed towards persons with brown skin, rather Native American, African American or Hispanic. Simultaneously, each leader identified the need to thoroughly broadcast the importance of recognizing the sweeping nature of this problem, which is inclusive to reduce human rights, civil rights, public safety and justice across the United States. All speakers indicated the need for the Oklahoma public to vote. ( Oklahoman’s have until October 10th to register for the November elections.)
Many at the rallies reiterated with shouts the importance of uniting in groups, such as meeting and knowing your neighbors, participating in social media and attending social functions, education functions and rallies on interfacing subjects. http://yeahstub.com/article/nine-is-fine-meet-your-neighbors-and-make-plans-to-vote
Below, find the exactly related petition, with plans also for a second petition that the Oklahoma Governor, Mary Fallin meet with the Goodblanket family and their chosen advocates. Fallin per the family, has repeatedly registered plans to attend sessions with them as many as 9 times since December 2013, canceling the appointment each time, just prior to the meeting without indication of an alternative. Multiple speakers noted that Fallin was on the opposite side of the building hosting a wellness event which was covered by major news sources and attended by at least one star athlete, and noted area private schools.
