For the fourth time in the past six weekends, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ finished at the top of the domestic box office, according to industry figures released by movie tracking site Box Office Mojo on Monday. The weekend was the worst in six years with the top 12 movies grossing just $51.5 million in total ticket sales from Friday to Sunday.
In its sixth weekend, ‘Guardians’ earned $10.3 million, pushing its total to $294.7 million since opening Aug. 1. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ stayed at No. 2 in its fifth weekend, earning $6.5 million for a total of $174.6 million since opening Aug. 8.
Action comedy ‘Let’s Be Cops’ climbed two spots to No. 3 in its fourth weekend, earning $5.56 million for a total of $66.7 million since opening Aug. 13. ‘If I Stay,’ a young adult drama starring Chloe Grace Moretz and based on the 2009 novel, slipped one notch to No. 4 in its third weekend, earning $5.55 million for a total of $39.4 million since opening Aug. 22.
CIA thriller ‘The November Man,’ starring Pierce Brosnan, inched up one spot to No. 5 in its second weekend, earning $4.3 million for a total of $17.9 million since opening Aug. 27. The only new nationwide release of the weekend, the family drama ‘The Identical,’ bombed, finishing No. 12 with an abysmal $1.5 million opening.
FRIDAY’S NATIONWIDE RELEASES
‘Dolphin Tale 2’, starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, is the sequel to the 2011 family drama ‘Dolphin Tale.’ Rated PG and inspired by a true story, ‘Dolphin Tale 2’ brings together the team of people who saved Winter the dolphin’s life as they try to find her a companion in the wake of her surrogate mother’s passing. ‘No Good Deed,’ starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, is a thriller about a devoted wife and mother of two living in suburban Atlanta. When a stranger shows up at her door claiming car trouble, she offers to help him but finds herself in a fight for survival when he invades her home. ‘No Good Deed’ is rated PG-13. TUESDAY’S DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASES
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is the action hero sequel to the 2011 original. Rated PG-13, ‘The Winter Soldier’ finds Steve Rogers struggling to embrace his role in the modern world while battling a sinister Soviet agent. A stellar 89 percent of reviews are positive on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, which called the film ‘a superior entry in the Avengers canon and sure to thrill Marvel diehards.’ Watch the official trailer here.
‘Brick Mansions,’ starring Paul Walker, is an action crime drama about an undercover Detroit cop who teams up with an ex-con to bring down a crime lord. Only 26 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film is ‘choppily edited and largely bereft of plot.’ ‘Brick Mansions’ is rated PG-13. Watch the official trailer here.
