Halloween in Central Iowa does not mean a night off from live music. Nineties rockers Winger and Pink Floyd tribute band Think Floyd USA will be in Clive, the House of Bricks will hold their 2nd Annual “Heaven and Hell” Party, Wooly’s will host “The Grateful for Dead Moines Hippie Halloween Party”, and legendary keyboard player Ian McLagan will perform at Vaudeville Mews. The Seven Flags Event Center in Clive will host “Welcome to the Scream” at 8 p.m. The Halloween Party will feature performances by the Pink Floyd tribute band Think Floyd USA, Nineties rockers Winger, and local opener Bordeaux. Think Floyd USA (see video) is widely regarded as one the top Pink Floyd productions in America. The Chicago-based band has put in more than ten years of performances across the country earning rave reviews. New York’s Winger (see slideshow) recorded two platinum albums and six Top 20 singles during the Nineties. The hair band released the new studio album Better Days Comin’ in April. Tickets for the all ages show are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show. Show up in costume for a chance to win a prize.
The House of Bricks in Des Moines will hold their Second Annual “Heaven and Hell” Party starting at 7 p.m. The venue’s party will extend to The Rooftop, the House of Bricks’ rooftop restaurant and bar. The evening’s festivities will include a costume contest for a $100 food/bar tab and live music from Clive rockers Shatter, Auburn (Iowa) “whiskey gospel” band King of the Tramps, and Ankeny’s The Count Spookula. The event is restricted those 21 or older, and admission is free.
Wooly’s in Des Moines will host “The Grateful for Dead Moines Hippie Halloween Party” (see poster) starting at 8 p.m. Several area bands will be masquerading/performing as big name jam bands. The DSM Guitar Orchestra will perform as Sublime, Ames-based Obsidian’s Dream will give their take on the party’s namesake (The Grateful Dead), Des Moines digital funk band SP3 (with members of West Des Moines funk rock jam band Omega Dog) will pose as Umphrey’s McGee, Ames jam band Floodplane will perform as Phish, and James Biehn & The Chilly Water All-Stars as Widespread Panic. Tickets for the event are $10 in advance (or at the door, if you wear a costume) and $15 on the day of the show. The event is restricted to those 21 or older.
The Gas Lamp will host a concert doubleheader on Halloween. The weekly Work Release Party is up first at 4:30 p.m. The venue will offer drink specials and free food (while it lasts) while Bob Pace and The Dangerous Band will play the best in blues, funk, and soul tunes, including songs from the band’s new album Slow Burn. The early show has a $5 cover charge. The nightcap will feature the Des Moines Steely Dan tribute band The Midnight Cruisers. The music will start at 9 p.m., and the late show also has a $5 cover charge. Both shows are 21-plus events.
Keyboard player Ian McLagan will perform at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines on Halloween. Over his five decade career, McLagan has been a touring or session musician for The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Westerberg, Izzy Stradlin, Frank Black, John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg, Warren Haynes, and others. He was also a member of Faces, Small Faces, The Empty Hearts, and Boz People, playing with the likes of Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart, Mick Hucknall (of Simply Red), Elliot Easton (The Cars), Wally Palmar (The Romantics), Clem Burke (Blondie), and Boz Burrell (King Crimson and Bad Company). McLagan has released a number of solo albums and has led the Bump Band since 1977. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Inductee released United States earlier this year. The music will start at 6:30 p.m. with The Corks (featuring Dave Wolf). Tickets for the all ages event are $15 in advance and $18 on the day of the show. Stick around afterwards for Misfits Karaoke at 10 p.m. (free admission, 21+).
The Des Moines Social Club will celebrate Halloween with “Rex Manning Day: TRL Edition”. The night will see TRL-inspired cover sets by Annalibera, Foxholes, New Member Charles, Easy Fruit, Hot Traxx, and MAIDS. The event will take place in the DMSC’s Basement Bar from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. There will be a $5 cover charge at the door, and you must be a least 18 years old to attend.
