The opening ten minutes of “Hawaii Five-O” for this Friday’s premiere episode for Season 5, “A ohe kahi e pe’e ai” (Nowhere to hide) made the long summer away from the island fade right away, as Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin went at it like an old married couple in their beloved “bromance.” Their required “psychological audit” had the partners bickering over everything from the exact span of their relationship to their typical sparring over who takes the wheel in “Danno’s” car, and the nickname was also a prickly point. A very unusual hit on a couple taking a tropical vacation soon took their attention and an unusual turn. Plenty of gunfire and good-natured camaraderie came forward in the first look at the elite crime-fighting force this fall.
Danny (Scott Caan) and Steve (Alex O’Loughlin) were just starting to get reflective and warm over memories of how the “Five-O” force came together when they were called to the mountaintop site of the crime. It was clear was a hit, as a hiking couple became targets, but the evidence wasn’t like the usual drive-by from a car, and Steve recognized some of the ammunition as military. Team members came on site, and introductions were hardly needed. Max Bergman (Masi Oka) had made detailed observations very available for a new examiner, Dr. Mindy Shaw, played by Amanda Setton, and expect plenty of further action involving her character later. She’s too much of a looker to sit home at night. Kono (Grace Park) was having a romancing rinse on the beach with Adam (Ian Anthony Dale), and Chin Ho was clearly being tailed everywhere on his way, but still the “ohana” was back together, including cast regular now, Jorge Garcia, as Jerry Ortega. His quirky abilities came in very handy identifying that it was a specific kind of combat drones that brought the demise of the pair on vacation, but he also knew that creating such a device could be possible from items off the shelf at a store. That kind of availability also let him know that he could zone in on the frequency, and foil the robotic destroyers. Nothing comes that easily, though.
Jerry was on a stakeout of a library loser who was buying rare books for the high-quality paper to be converted into counterfeit currency when Steve and Danny came calling, and it didn’t take long for Steve to take a call from the mastermind of the drones, John Redmond, who insisted he was not out to terrorize, but to bring “justice” for the military attacks by drones on his perceived people. He was too cunning to let his call be traced, but Kono soon traced the man behind some big dollars, Lawrence Turner, and the team started tracking. Steve gets set up by a man position on a park bench, so Danny takes the wheel for once in his own car, with Jerry and Captain Grover (Chi McBride) in tow behind.
When Kono gets a call about a possible plane landing, Danny and Steve realize that the drones are a diversion to allow the plane to land, and pick up Turner. Jerry does get to play the hero, jamming all the frequencies of the flying slaughtering machines. All of the island residents flee for cover, as they fly over any populated places in range. Grace (Teilor Grubbs) makes a touching call to touch base with her dad, feeling the danger. Kono gets to give one of her famous kicks to take down Redmond, as her reason to get up in the morning, and Steve intercepts Turner, taking a shot in the hip.
Getting some ribbing about getting a bulk discount for “bullet extractions,” McGarrett is escorted home by Jerry, while Kono is greeted at home by Adam, who persists with his marriage proposal. Kono still questions their safety as a couple, but a kiss seems to convince her. Meanwhile, Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) pays a visit to prison to talk with his deceased wife’s brother, and convince him to sign an affidavit that confirms he accepted no money from a transfer that was sure to mark him for wrongdoing, Jerry gets marked himself by the suspected bookstore fraud, and Danny comes home to find Marco Reyes (Anthony Ruivivar) waiting for him, and wanting to settle a score from Danny’s brother.
Family matters seemed never to be settled for the force so good at settling cases.
