Did you know that the lame man who was healed in Acts 3 could not go back to the Temple Gate? Why is that? The reason why is because the blessings of the Lord are not meant to take us back to our past. The blessings of God are meant to move us forward into the future.
The lame man at the Temple Gate had been there for a long time collecting alms. According to Acts 4:22 this man was in his 40’s. What was he going to do now for a living?
We have to understand that blessings bring responsibilities after they happen. Now that this man was no longer lame he could not go back to the Temple Gate and collect alms.
He now had the responsibility to find a new occupation in order to support himself. This individual can’t go back to his past and expect God to bless Him there. God blesses us so we can move on in life and accomplish His will.
The trouble with many people is that they receive a blessing from the Lord but they go back to the same conditions and same lifestyle expecting God to continue His blessings. They go back to their past assuming the same results will happen again.
That’s not the purpose of God’s blessings in our lives. His blessings are for progression and movement in order to grow, mature, advance, expand and improve our lives in Him. We are to progress to new experiences in life.
When we go back to our past we go back to old attitudes, conditions, environments, friends and love ones that may hinder any improvements in our lives. God wants us to keep moving forward and elevate ourselves in Him.
The healing was great for this lame man but now he has new choices to make and responsibilies to fulfill. Blessings are always nice to receive but they bring conditions for the future.
We do not grow in the Lord by going back to our past. We grow in the Lord by experiencing new things ahead. The purpose of a blessing is to move us in that direction.
In Acts 3:1-10 this man was extremely excited and thankful for the blessing. He was leaping and praising the Lord after forty plus years of being lame. Who wouldn’t be excited after such a great miracle?
Eventually though the excitement may wear away once a person realizes the changes a blessing creates. If a person doesn’t understand the purpose of a blessing and the responsibilities it brings then wrong choices could be made and unthankfulness can set in.
Coming out of bondage in Egypt, the Children of Israel became ungrateful to the Lord in their journey to the Promised Land. They received many blessings from the Lord but developed an ungrateful attitude for them. They started complaining about their journey and God’s provisions. The Israelites also developed a desire to go back to Egypt and back to their past.
Many people lose sight of the purpose of their blessings and tend to go back to their past. They recycle themselves in the same old problems by making the wrong choices and refusing the responsibilities to move on.
Blessings bring different conditions and choices in life. When we refuse to change then we turn our blessings into problems. When we refuse to make the right choices then the blessings and provisions from the Lord will not be enough motivation to press on.
The first generation of Israelites lost out and died in the wilderness. They lost sight of the purpose for the blessings.
Have you lost sight of the purpose of your blessings in life? Which direction are you going?
