Through a healthy diet and proper oral care, teeth can be whitened and re-mineralized, tooth enamel can be re-built, tooth loss can be prevented, and gums can be healed. Common gum diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, chronic periodontitis, and necrotizing periodontal disease can be healed naturally by faithfully taking the following steps.
The key is always diet first. Raw, organic fresh vegetables and fruits with emphasis on vegetables should comprise 80 percent of the diet, and the good fats like olive oil and avocados second. Avoid all refined processed foods, particularly sugar laden foods. Avoid artificial additives. Watch for the words artificial flavors, artificial colors, and preservatives in the ingredients. Eliminate GMOs and pasteurized dairy products. Avoid animal protein in meat and dairy products from factory raised animals and farm raised fish. Avoid pesticides and herbicides.
Soda should be eliminated from the diet, including diet soda because it is so acidic that it removes vitamins and minerals from the teeth and gums even the short time it is in the mouth. Most bread and white rice does the same thing.
Do not smoke regular cigarettes or marijuana. Large concentrations of carbon and free radicals get introduced into the mouth which cause chemical reactions that damage cells and deplete the mouth
of vitamins and minerals as soda and sugar do.
Floss properly daily, even if it causes the gums to bleed. It prevents cavities at and below the gum line and increases gum healing. Floss around each tooth and reach down into the gums.
Avoid store bought toothpaste and mouthwashes, even the “natural” kind in health food stores. Combine equal amounts of baking soda and unrefined sea salt and brush with that instead. You will get used to the taste. A few drops of essential oils can be added for better flavor, some of which are antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, or antioxidant such as cinnamon, clove and eucalyptus. Tea tree oil is antibacterial for candida issues. Trace minerals, calcium magnesium powder, or bentonite clay can be added in place of part of the baking soda to aid in teeth re-mineralization and bentonite clay helps draw out impurities.
If you insist on using commercial toothpaste, avoid those with the ingredients fluoride, saccharine, aspartame, artificial colors or dyes, glycerine, sodium lauryl sulfate, carrageenan, triclosan, or propylene glycol. Carrageenan is known to promote inflammation. Glycerin prevents re-mineralization. Watch the video and be sure not to use Crest toothpaste with the blue beads in it.
Brush teeth gently if you are not in good health or it will strip tooth enamel and damage the gums. Otherwise, vigorous brushing stimulates tooth re-mineralization and blood flow. Always use a “soft” toothbrush in good condition, brushing in a circular motion on the teeth and gums. Brush the tongue and the roof of the mouth as well.
Add a lot of raw garlic to the diet as in salads. Chew on garlic regularly with an open mouth and breathe through the mouth while chewing. Its antibacterial properties reduce bacteria that infects gum tissue and creates periodontal pockets.
If experiencing dental problems, try oil pulling in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Swish one spoonful of coconut or sesame oil through the mouth and teeth using the tongue to push it for 15 to 20 minutes if possible. It heals gums and teeth and pulls toxins from the body. Spit it out just like you would toothpaste.
Dr. Shillington’s Tooth and Gum Formula can be purchased through Green Lifestyle Market and used as a mouthwash, on the toothbrush after brushing the teeth, or in a water pick, but the water pick should be rinsed out after use because the tee tree oik will damage the rubber seals over time. Do not rinse the mouth after using the formula.
Dr. Shillington says, “The Echinacea in the formula deadens pain, kills germs, kicks the immune system into action, and starts working against bacteria that is deep down in the gum pockets. Bayberry and Oak Bark will tighten up the gum tissue right before your eyes. Peppermint is a very strong disinfectant, reduces inflammation, and also increases blood circulation to carry off toxins, bring in nutrition, and generally cleanse the mouth. Clove Oil is a great pain reducer for toothache.”
Gum disease can be reversed by these methods, but in extreme cases see a dentist and/or periodontist.
